I'm actually in the process of watching Evangelion with some friends.
Its this kid who has to ride a mech and fight giant monsters that are from space or maybe the bible? And there are two girls who arent interested in him but fight over him anyways. Then theres his dad who always pisses off the scary military dudes who sometimes are rocks, but they always let him off the hook like "ehhh hes a cool guy who gets the space bible monsters killed". Then theres a hot guy and two hot chicks who keep going out to dinner and pointing guns at each other, they bone sometimes. I havent seen the end yet but I think the military dudes are trying to create a new humanity, but as big scary mech monsters? And they have jesus locked up in the basement. Oh and theres a lot of great music, you should watch it.

I know most of the rough details. I've never been able to get into stuff like NGE, Sidonia, Gundam, or Robotech. I always put them down halfway through the first episode. I think I just didn't get a giant robots gene or something.
Space Battleship Yamato/Star Blazers has been my main jam for the last couple years. The recent series has a few NGE e.aster eggs in it. Maybe I should just force myself to get past the first episode of Evangelion so I can get all the jokes...

First of all, It's Macross, not Robotech, and no gundam? I'm disappointed.

That's okay, just not my thing. And Robotech is the version I was introduced to, I know it's contentious but oh well.

This thread is disgusting. NGE is a deconstruction (not parody) of mecha and has many similar elements to the first ""real robot" show Gundam. For example the Western meme "get in the robot" is literally the plot of EVERY mecha show with a young protagonist. Amuro Ray in Gundam spends an entire mini arc sitting in his room crying and suffering from PTSD as a child soldier but people act like NGE was the first to do this.
Then like Zebra said this show is really just an edgy Ultraman homage. Anno is a massive Ultraman fan especially Ultra Seven which is why the Nerv outfits look like they do. Also the capsule the pilots sit in inside their Evas look like the transformation device that they use in the original Ultraman. The 5 minute time limit is an homage to the color timer than Ultraman has on his chest.
The psychological aspects of NGE were ground-breaking at the time and in general the show does a good job of building off te backs of previous Japanese meda and it's popularity speaks for itself but Western misinterpretations that have held since the mid 90s should be wiped away in this day and age.
Here is a list of things you should watch BEFORE you watch NGE or at least afterwards to see where everything came from:
1. Mobile Suit Gundam '79
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Suit_Gundam (The archetype for "real robot" mecha japanimations)
2. Space Battleship Yamato
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Battleship_Yamato (One of the first japanimations in general, not just in sci-fi genre to have a serialized plot where events from oe episode matter at the beginning of the next one)
3. Ultraman/ Ultraseven
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultra_Seven (The original tokusatsu classic giant monster show. Anno's favorite and well-known in Japan to be the main influence in NGE)
4. Blue Blazes (manga or lie action drama)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aoi_Hon%C5%8D ( A humorous look at the second generation japanimation and anime book artists going to college in the early 80s. A good history lesson)
5. Otaku no Video
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otaku_no_Video (This is basically the most important oVA Gainx ever produced. It's a gonzo look into the world of he so-called "otaku" made by otaku.)
6. Insufficient Direction (no link. this is an nime book series by his wife circa 2005 that shows Anno's character and explains his obsession with japanese media)

you could get a similar but better experienceby just watching the second quarter of Gurren Lagann or get a far superior experience by taking a moment to view the world around you in all its beauty
