II: Analysis

The failure of this operation is not unique. It represents a multitude of operations of a similar scale against the United Systems Alliance.

Despite high initial momentum at the beginning of this campaign, over recent months we have been suffering defeats and casualties at an unsustainable rate. Without support from the greater Empire the fleet's combat capabilities will fall below acceptable parameters within the year.

The primary reason for this is the speed at which the United Systems Alliance can respond to our operations.

At any given time there are three United Systems Carrier groups within our theater of operations, and in 74% of this territory they can respond within a 48 hours to hostile incursions. The window between the destruction of local defensive vessels and enemy carrier arrival leaves a window to small for any ground operations short of orbital bombardment.

Analysis indicates that while the Carrier Groups are currently on the offensive, defense is likely their primary objective.

We believe that an assault on the United Systems core regions is the most prudent way to decrease enemy pressure in the local theater.

Today, the Omega Shard leads from the front.

He pounds from bunker to bunker, shouting encouragement at his men. "You're my cornerstone!" he tells at a wounded Legionairre, grabbing her by her armored shoulders. "Bear the weight!"

She gets back up, into the fight. "Come on!"Crixton Var snaps, running along behind him, saying the things his commander cannot. "You don't need two arms to fight!"

He calls for fire support. Artillery shrieks overhead. On the plains below the Imperial perimeter, Assyrians storm out of drop pods. Heavy Bolters burst up like mortars and the Omega Shard and his lieutenant duck behind a burning Reaper for cover.

“This is going well,” Crixton rumbles.

An Assyrian particle beam needles a little hole through the Legionnaire's padded curiass. She falls dead. Assyrian marines swarm over her bunker and then the Spider Tank supporting this bastion fires a mortar round into the mess, shredding the Assyrians, the bunker, and all the Legionaries inside. The concussion knocks Crixton against his leader.

“About as well as expected,” The Shard grunts. Crixton laughs.

The grind is eternal. Like duty. The Omega Shard keeps fighting, out here past the edge of the Empire, because failure is unthinkable. Defeat’s much worse than death.

But he is so, so tired.

Crixton gets up and starts shooting Assyrians. “You’re not really going to do it.” Even though he’s fully armored, and only a meter away, his voice on the com crashes with static. “You’re not going to go. It’s mad.”

The Assyrian Marines start firing at Crixton.

Particle beams spark and scream off his armored torso. The Omega Shard yanks him back to cover. A Phalanx maniple rushes forward to plug the gap. “I have my orders. Bram sent the report went all the way up, and the decision came all the way back.”

Crixton Var's blank helmet swivels to stare. “You mean — ?”

"It came from the Emperor himself." He can feel his own, immortal strength flow through his body, strength that would be offered as sacrifice to another whom he had never met if he failed. "I'm ordered to invade the American home systems. At all costs."

An Assyrian Terminator slams down from low orbit. The Shard's reflexes take over, and he absolutely demolishes it, hacking and slashing, putting all his rage and fear and sorrow into each blow. He roars and roars. The machine burns.

His soldiers cheer.

"That's a job for several elite incursion legions. Not us. We should wait until-"

“It’s the task I’ve been given. I will use what I have.”

“Mutiny,” Crixton whispers. “You should mutiny.”

Oh, to mutiny. To be like his own Legion, who left the Empire to serve him, and were only spared the wrath of the imperial war machine by the virtue of his own usefulness.

Duty is victory. Mutiny is worse than death. Even if death seems certain.

“No,” The Omega Shard says. And that’s that.

The Assyrians are falling back from their perimeter as Reapers shriek overhead, turning their retreat into a rout. Together, they’ve held the line.
