EPILOGUE

In the corner of the operating room, Dr. Meng was washing up. For a moment, Tanaka thought she caught his attention, a quick glance to acknowledge her return to consciousness and life, but no; it was a trick of her Miracle Cure reconstructed brain tissue sorting itself out. Finished, the doctor ticked a checkbox on his iPad and made his exit, nodding perfunctorily to the new figure walking in.

The new man approached the recovery bed. He stood close enough for Tanaka to see, even through the blurred vision she couldn't blame entirely on Miracle Cure, his military insignia and the humorless smile that showed every one of his teeth.
