The Great Game: Part 1

Post by Shaggy » Mon Apr 11, 2022 10:08 pm

Joseph Batavi was called many things by many people. Liar. Tyrant. Incompetent. The one thing nobody calls him, however, was corrupt. Since he took the presidency, he had lived a modest life. For 10 years he had led the Golden Republic, resting on his laurels earned in the unification wars. He had done his best to lead the republic as best he could, but soon the Second Election would come.

Recent years had seen many crisis: The great famine, a collapse of the economy, and the death of the beloved peacemaker, Gerhan, all have led to this. Now, Joseph sat at his desk, looking over profiles. The Elections were a year from now- he had to look at the competition. Conveniently, the 7 main candidates had split into 3 parties: The Modernists, the Traditionalists, and the Golden Alliance.

The Modernists were the party Batavi was afraid of. They believed in expansion beyond the Republic, into the stars. They have 2 candidates: Turen, the Lightbringer, and Osif Gerhan, the Passionary. Turen was, by all accounts, a great person. They wished to see the Republic enter a golden age, and eventually reach space. In private, Turen was quite friendly. Joseph had spoken to them quite a bit in the past, back when he was a Modernist too.

Osif was quite the opposite. He wished to despoil the stars, and make the world into a terrible, grey fortress from which they would conquer the world. Osif was the son of Minister Gerhan, who was responsible for the 5 years of peace during Batavi's early presidency. However, he was assassinated by an unknown party soon after. His son did not take this well, and has since become determined to get revenge. He blamed the universe, and wishes to see it all burn. Osif and Turen do not get along whatsoever. Osif believes Turen to be too moderate, unable to deal with the dangers of the outside. Turen sees Osif as a warmongering tyrant, devoid of any morals. In spite of their clashing, they are trying to win the election together. What happens after, nobody knows.

The Traditionalists were odd folk. Many were older than Batavi himself, and lived in a time where the states of old were not unified under the Golden Republic. Batavi preferred the Traditionalists, however, for they had helped him run his administration smoothly. The party, however, is quite divided. The 2 major players have to contend with many, many smaller ones, which weakens them.

The first major player is Margaret Oktan. Born before the Unification of the world, Oktan had always been an advocate of freedom from the government. Her platform was a decentralization of the Golden Republic, to allow provinces to effectively govern themselves. This approach could work, but would be difficult to manage. Batavi dismissed her, there was little hope that she would be elected.

The Second was the secretive Dr. Sergius Von Tamor. He was the quiet type, but left a profound impact when he did speak. Tamor was a monarchist, but never really revealed anything about his platform aside from it. He often spoke to himself about 'The Golden Child', but nobody knew what he meant. Some question his sanity, but from the little Batavi interacted with Sergius he seems well enough.

The final dossier was regarding the Golden Alliance- Batavi's own party. There was, of course, him, but the other 2 were a little more concerning. First off, there was Tamiya, the moderate. Batavi personally recruited her, which was one of his few regrets. She was so dreadfully boring that any conversation with her was like bashing his head against a wall. He didn't even remember her platform, but he knew it was something about "agrarianism" or something of the sort. The other, his own son, was quite a bit more interesting.

Alexei Batavi was Joseph's first and only child, his pride and joy. Alexei followed in his father's footsteps, and had entered politics. He was a minor candidate, yes, but he had much potential. Alexei was looking for a running mate, regardless of party. While his father didn't approve, he did allow Alexei to stay in the Golden Alliance till he did.

This election would not be easy. Batavi's own failures were well known, and radicalism was spreading. If he was to maintain control, he'd have to work hard.

Things are heating up.

TUREN

Turen has been working with a charity, but is yet to see gain from it.

POPULAR SUPPORT: High
MILITARY SUPPORT: Medium
GOVERNMENT SUPPORT: Medium

OSIF GERHAN (MOTIONIST-LOYALIST)

With the split, Gerhan has begun promoting loyalty and unity within the Motionist party. While these haven't been entirely successful, they have moved forward.

POPULAR SUPPORT: Medium
MILITARY SUPPORT: Low
GOVERNMENT SUPPORT: Medium

MOTIONIST-MODERATE

The Motionist-Moderate have split off from Gerhan's party. They are much, much more moderate, and are attempting to work with Turen's bloc. Loyalist elements have began infiltrating, and have been plotting. Unrelatedly, the party's former leader, Anton Suirre, has shat himself to death. The party is now leaderless.

POPULAR SUPPORT: Low
MILITARY SUPPORT: High
GOVERNMENT SUPPORT: Low

MARGARET OKTAN

Joseph and Oktan have had a debate.

The debate went well, with Joseph monologuing about the success of a centralized state, and finished it with a heart-felt speech addressed to all within the republic.

Margaret Oktan countered that a central government is authoritarian, and that the state should defend the liberty of it’s citizens. Happy and free citizens mean a happy and free republic after all. However, she was interrupted. An enraged supporter of Joseph Batavi opened fire on Oktan, narrowly missing her. Joseph Batavi is under investigation, and Oktan is in protective custody.
