Didn't want to start a new thread for this, but San Diego could potentially maybe become a new hotbed for brikwars.
Professor Fairfield and I have been sending private messages back and forth to eachother for the past month or so about getting together for a possible brikwar. Today we met up (in person and not on the internets), and we've decided to do the impossible: attempt to get outside interest in brikwars, with our ultimate goal being San Diego State students playing against UCSD students in a fight to the death.
how exactly we're going to do this is still hazy, but we're both going around trying to find all the nerds we can to get this thing off the ground. If this actually happens, I'll be pretty suprised, but very pleasantly.
what's also great is that if he can get 4 or more UCSD students interested and officially forms a club, the school will give em 500 bucks to spend on "supplies", which means briks and minifigs.
basically, what this means is that if you're a San Diego player, you've got glimpses of a possible Brikwars League on the horizon. Will keep you updated, but this is the news so far.

Holy shit
actually, do you have suggestions on what to get?
we're planning on doing mostly sci-fi stuff.

With a budget like that, I'd focus on building nice, coordinated armies. I think that for newcomers, it would be more interesting to see bad-ass, uniform armies than ramshackle assortments of minifigs. After building a nice set of units, you could focus on vehicles, and then eventually terrain.

Uhhhh, 500 bucks. Dude, this is Lego. You can't get crap with 500.....
LoL, but anyways, I think you should just try to get some figs together. At least get a bunch of soldiers of different colors.... some troll armies, space marines, stormtroopers, black hawks, whatever you can get. That way, if you find people lacking figs they'll at least have a cool looking army to play with. Also, be sure to get tophats and suits!!!! Top hat army FTW!!!!

If you spend time looking around Brinklink, and are smart about it, 500 bucks can probably net you a decent amount of LEGOs

Meh I know. It's just when I think of sets. Lego seems to totally overprice their sets, but I really don't know how huge of a profit they make. Honestly, I see a cool design on LDD, and there's usually a massive price tag. The model isn't even that big. Remember, 400 for the old star destroyer. Then, take the drop ship and whatever castle is out and the troll boat and the big space thing whatever is out, and that's about 400 right there. Honestly I remember thinking as a kid that if I ever had a million, I would empty the whole Lego section in Toys R Us and still have to use the FBI's credit card to pay for any extra.
EDIT: Bummer, that's a pretty boring 200 post. Ah well.

Yeah, as long as you buy it from TLC it'll be pricey. I just had another idea for you, IV, keep a bit of the money as a garage-sale fund, and go around at garage sales to look for sweet deals on old LEGO

Buy some minifigs on Bricklink.
I'd think, like, 10 or 15 each of some cool factions, then of course weapons, vehicles, and terrrain.
EDIT: Or, you know, a few
Imperial Dropshipsand some other cool sci-fi faction. Agents look nice, but you can't get a volume of them. Personally, I would buy a few dropships and Bricklink some Agents. Yeah. I would.
Stormtroopers vs. Agents. Shiny.

I suggest buying the cheapest minifig on BL in bulk. You can get 25 Steve Nashes for 12.50, that's one of the cheapest you'll find.

Or, if that's not cool enough for ya, these guys would make a great army. Cheapest space minifigs on the internet.

You can also get an undead army for pretty cheap too. You'll have to buy armor/weapons for the skeletons though. Honestly though, you can get tons of weapons for hecka cheap though.
