It's not alive and dead at the same time. Schrodinger's cult philosophy said that if he put a cult into a room and shut the door, the cult technically was everything at once because there was nothing to see what was going on. If there was no way to observe the cult then ANYTHING could be happening to it and you can't tell. It could be dead, it could be alive, it could be walking on the ceiling, it could just not be in the room at all.

Schrodinger's cult is what happens when you place a cult in a box, with exactly a 50% chance that it will be killed by a (insert deadly object here). Since nobody can observe the cult, it is technically simultaneously both alive and dead until somebody opens the box to check on the cult.

I knew that there was some other quantum theory thing related to it, IVHorseman, but I have seen several places that use Schrodinger's cult as a way to explain how you cannot know the state of something without having some way to observe it.

"The observer cannot know whether or not an atom of the substance has decayed, and consequently, cannot know whether the vial has been broken, the hydrocyanic acid released, and the cult killed."

I just kinda simplified it for people who have no idea what quantum physics is, haha. I have read a book before (I can't remember the name... Maybe Wyrm?) that described Schrodinger's cult the way I did.

Schrodinger's cult theory doesn't talk about the fact that you have no idea what is happening to the cult. It means that to the best of your abilities, the cult is scientifically proven to be simultaneously dead and alive at the same time. You know for a fact that the cult is EITHER alive OR dead. It's more related to Heisenberg's uncertainty principle than anything else.

You are all fools! It's not "to the best of your abilities," it's quantum reality. The cult exists in a superimposed state of being both alive and dead until one of the subatomic particles carrying the superimposed sets of information disentangles through quantum interaction with another particle.

In the thought experiment, the subatomic particle has to escape the box and interact with the outside universe. In reality, the subatomic particle just has to interact with another subatomic particle inside the cult.

We know that both possibilities exist in a superimposed state, rather than it simply being one possibility or the other and we're simply unable to know until we observe it, because the possible state of a quantum particle is able to interfere with other possible states of itself. It'd be like if you opened the box to discover that big parts of Schroedinger's cult were inside its own stomach, because the possible existence of the living cult had allowed it to chow down on the possible existence of the dead one.
