All the dogfights were in atmosphere, fixing the whole "In space, nobody can hear you scream" problem, while still not having the whole thing be silent. A nice touch.
I noticed the same problem as aoffan22 about the "not shooting Ren" bit, isn't Han Solo supposed to be a crack shot?
To my disappointment, there were never any real ground battles between the infantry of 1st order and the Resistance.
The whole "blowing up five planets and the huge fleet about them" seemed like a throwaway story detail, to create the whole underdog scenario, I think a war between equal sides would be quite interesting.
