DropBox is dead.

Post by Tzan » Fri Sep 02, 2016 12:54 pm

I just got an email.
Hi Tzan,

We’re writing to let you know that we’ll be discontinuing the ability to render HTML content in-browser via shared links or Public Folder.
If you're using Dropbox shared links to host HTML files for a website, the content will no longer display in-browser.

Please note that this change will take effect for your account on October 3, 2016, and only impacts how shared files are displayed on the web.
Your files will remain safe in Dropbox.

Thanks for being a loyal Dropbox user.

- The Dropbox Team
Well FUCK.

Every single image link going back to 2011 or so, will be broken.
I feel like a peasant now, like all of you.

No you got it backwards.
Even from the Public folder, html files wont display properly.

I was confused about the wording, I still am a bit.
I tried looking for the outrage on their forum, but I can't get in, I get this error message:
"Secure Connection Failed"
Which is a Firefox error message.
I get the same error on Chrome.
On a Google search for "Dropbox forum" Avast is putting a red dot next to those items, "this site is not safe"
Not sure what that's all about. Avast might be overprotective but it doesn't link with Firefox to block me.

At this point I'm thinking its just their attempt to stop people from hosting free websites.
I did think about doing that, but even I am not that bad.

I now think my images might be OK.
But who knows for how long?
... for how long?

Dropbox Basic users will be able to use the Public folder until March 15, 2017. After that date the files in your Public folder will become private, and links to these files will be deactivated. Your files will remain safe in Dropbox.
Thanks Obama

Good riddance. I'm pretty sure all of my dropbox hosted battles have been backed up by colette anyway.

looks like they are entirely removing the public folder

...so why is there any reason to stick with them and not a cheaper alternative? no point in axeing features to save money if nobody is going to pay anymore

Correct!

You can still make a link that shows up on a forum page as link text.
That link takes you to a dropbox page and you view the image there, which is lame.

My email said:
Hi Tzan,

We’re always looking to improve the Dropbox sharing experience. The Public folder was the first sharing method we introduced, and since then, we’ve built even better ways for you to share securely and work together with your team.

As a result, we’ll soon be ending support for the Public folder. Dropbox Basic users will be able to use the Public folder until March 15, 2017. After that date the files in your Public folder will become private, and links to these files will be deactivated. Your files will remain safe in Dropbox.

If you’d like to keep sharing files in your Public folder, you can create new shared links. Just make sure to send the new URLs to your collaborators.

In addition to shared links, we have a number of sharing options designed to make collaboration easier and give you more control. To learn more, visit our Help Center.

I love it when companies are cutting off your dick, and they tell you its an improvement.

I use Basic, but its being removed from Pro too.
Even if it were available in Pro, its $10/month.
You could set up your own web site for less than that and have image hosting and a web page slandering DropBox.

This is the host I use for the Brikverse web site
http://www.mddhosting.com/

I don't get ... any traffic, so its hard for me to tell how good it works, but they haven't screwed anything up.

that professional plan looks pretty good, but sadly they only have an uptime percantage of 99.92%! Sad!
thanks for the link

I use FileZilla for FTP

I forget how it set up by default but you need to make sure this is set to Binary:

Edit>Settings...>Transfers>FileTypes>
Check the Binary radio button
