It actually was. I heard del Toro said that PR was something of a guilty pleasure for him. He just wanted to make a movie with giant robots in it. I don't get it why someone thought it was a good idea to make a sequel to such movie.

For the same reason somebody thought Sharknado deserved four sequels (all about the lettuce). Actually, now I kinda wanna see Pacific Rim vs Sharknado . . .
