Stud.io is an alternative to LDD that was made by Bricklink IIRC.

In my experience you will want mass of generalist units (tanks, fighter/bombers and riflemen) supported by a wide range of specialized units. So my armies have huge quantities of those generalists with many types of specialists that are each in small quantities.
