if victory's your game, INVEST IN MINIFIG ARMOR. +1d6 armor in exchange for only -1" movement makes a soldier AMAZING, and unless you're doing close combat, it's totally worth it.
speaking of CC, i'd stay away from pole-arms. reach is good, but UR 5 is crippling. unless you've got entire squads of halbrediers (where there's enough that at least one or two will hit every time, which means 4+ guys), it's not worth it.
