the only stores near me that have lego are target and wal-mart. Also a five below, which is great for getting impulse buys, that's where I go to get most of my space police.

I just got these at our local Asian emporium. They didn't have anything else unfortunately. The brand is 'Knix' and everything is pretty well moulded and finished. I now have three Chinese soldiers for Steampunk games, a whole lot of really useful parts and my Great Old Ones now have lazer cannons to call their own.
Something I thought was really cool was that they provide an extra spare hand for the minifig.

Well... if it works, it works. I'm linking you to Chris's "Toybox of FAIL" though, on principle. I'd like to hear from Stubbs what Lego's policy in New Zealand is.

What are you planning on creating?

I've been buying Russian clone Bionicles from the local general store in town for $NZ3.99 each, well today they had twin packs of the clones on sale for $NZ2.00. Yes that's right $NZ1.00 each! I purchased two of the twin packs today, but I will get some more later. They are just too useful for providing parts to make Steampunk and Vic Sci-Fi walkers.

The twin pack boxes' instructions are a little alarming though because they detail how 'Seastar' (female) and 'Firedrake' (male) can be joined together...... and then..... oh dear..... things become ..... steamy...

I got a few of those. Some green, and a couple blue. I still can't find any red ones.

I am the master at minifig hoarding. 11-12 Spartans during series 2, 10 Samurai during Series 3, and 7 Scientists/5 Radiation Suit Guys during series 4. I would start a viking army but abandoned the idea because the FBI got tired of feeling the bags and went on strike.
