Stained glass! Stained glass! STAINED GLASS!!! by Julie vanderMeulen

Check that Benny out. I helped my friend make that. She got the design from a LEGO Movie poster, I just helped her make it out of stained glass. This is, even more-so than my stuff, a true stained glass mosaic because true to the intended purpose of most stained glass, light actually goes through this one, and boy does it look nice. The technique was to do a mosaic in the way I've been doing mine thus-far, but do it on top of a thin piece of glass and use silicone to attach the pieces to the back. Then the mosaic was grouted with black grout and then a metal channel was put around the perimeter with a hanging wire inside the channel which comes to two coils at the top. I'm super excited to try one like this of my own, and I'm super proud of Julie for all the stuff she learned and how good she is becoming at doing glass work.

I've only ever taught people like 2 things in my life. First, roller derby, but now I've been teaching her how to do stained glass. It makes me feel really good to like have given her the tools (knowledge) that I have and then see her use them and do something awesome like this. I helped her do it, like I did make some of the cuts of these pieces, but that's only because she still hasn't seen all the techniques I use to get the right shape of glass, or know when to use them yet, but she's gotten really far. Also, for this, part of it was to perfect a glass on glass technique. I was actually going to take a 2-day class for how to do glass on glass last year but it got cancelled, so here I am proud of myself because I ended up directing a glass on glass piece and it turned out really well. I want to emphasize though, this is much more hers than mine, like she cut like 80% of the pieces with no input from me and she chose some of the glass at the glass shop like that sexy background colour, and she chose the design and the dimensions and did the vast majority of the work, I just did some really hard stuff mostly related to the logo. I produced the frame, but again that was an experiment where I was trying to learn and accomplish something at the same time, and she is the one figured out how the structural support wire should be affixed inside the frame.

I guess I am a little confused of how to think about this because I've never done a collaboration before and I want to properly honour her as having made this but I feel like proud of my involvement and I'm trying to be modest but I am happy about what I did at the same time because the successes that I had here will let me use stained glass in this new way in the future.

Do you have a photo of that with light coming through?

I haven't done a whole lot of stained glass work, so I don't know if there's any other way to work around those tiny little circles for the eyes, but I wonder if the line edges could have been arranged differently. Like this one:



where even the "extra" lines are still positioned to support the form and motion of the image.

Yeah the lines on the face are a problem for me too.
She seems to like using black grout everywhere. Sometimes it works fine.
I would try using same colored grout to minimize the weirdness.
Not sure if there would even be a good solution for the lines around the eyes.
