You must have a terrible GM then. the star wars RPG especially is EXTREMELY open to improvisation, and you can do pretty much whatever you want.
I read up on the newest version, and it seemed pretty restrictive...

Besides, I'm more into the creative writing aspect of it than anything else. Text role play is all about outwitting your opponent, rather than out-rolling them.

Side note: In a recent role play, I was playing a custom Villain character while others were playing actual DC super heroes...I beat the frick out of Cyborg until he ran off like a ho, then I turned around and fought Black Canary and Bat Girl. I smashed Black Canary's face into the wall behind me and knocked her out, the kicked bat girl across the room before leaving because I was bored. :D

Sorry but that's an uninformed statement. I ran, and I'm still running a 20+ year game (Cyberpunk 2020 - more 2060 now) and most rolls are spur of the moment fudge to make the characters feel the story is in some way ordered. The fact of the matter is I have a general idea of the story and I let the characters do WHATEVER THEY PLEASE and only bring them back to the story for some of the important bits. The rest I make up as they brain storm ideas, creative wring enough for you? The dice rolling is more intense in combat when you just want time to plot on the fly while their counting up their stats. I always keep in mind the rules and the dice rolls always make sense but they are not important in themselves. The flow of the story and the coolness of the characters is.

I've found that that varies from DM to DM. I have a few friends that play different table tops, and the majority of them are all about stats and skills and dice rolls 'n such. :(

Yeah, I think they're called anoraks and leach the fun out of everything. If you like the free style aspect you might think about running a few games yourself.

Yeah, tabletop RPGs are still all about the rule of fudge. Dice rolls and character sheets exist only to give you a vague idea of what your guy is like and what tools are at his disposal. It's up to the player to be witty and creative.

So what you're saying is that you've convinced yourself that it's the fault of the games, and not that you have sucky friends.

One of the first things it says it says in ANY role-playing game rulebook is that the rules are only a start and they encourage you to do things your own way.

This sounds like you are playing an RPG where your character is an RPG gamer who is reading rules and making die rolls in a game. Hmm maybe I should write that game. Lots of stats, skills and die rolls to make your character, who is a gamer.

Title: Stats & Skills or S&S for short

Oh not my game, you must follow all the rules!
