Destroyer (WiP)

Post by Natalya » Sat Sep 05, 2009 12:50 am

After hearing a report of the developments in the Caid Sector, the Assyrians were disconcerted. The Stranian fleet, though it was a ramshackle mass of rainbow junkers, managed to wipe out a much more disciplined force due to its sheer size. The Assyrians had already known for some time that the Stranian capital ship, the Hodgepodge, was superior to their own Longinus Corvette in size and ability to deploy fighters, but the difference was not too great that it worried them. However, seeing the whole fleet in action together made an impression upon the Assyrians. The Assyrian fleet is small by comparison, with only a handful of admittedly random ships. It was time for a change.

Image

The Assyrians have decided to retrofit their capital ship Sonks, so that it may adequately compete with the Hodgepodge. Above, the ship has been stripped of its weapon emplacements, and the base has already been redesigned.

Image

This is the chief area of concern. The Longinus hull design is too thin for heavy ship to ship combat. It would be easy to split the ship in half with torpedoes or by ramming it. That will not be the case anymore. The Sonks will be upgraded to a full fledged Destroyer. The main change will be the new, wider hull deign. This will allow for the inclusion of sleeping quarters and other facilities for sustained travel in deep space. There will also hopefully be room for a small security station//armoury. Maybe even an airlock if I'm lucky.

Image

This is the new underside of the ship. The old ventral fin was replaced with this new rounder bottom section. The ship will be slightly shorter as a consequence, but it will be more balanced. A wider hull also means the opportunity for more gun emplacements, so expect this ship to end up with the most armaments of any ship here on the BrikWars forums. It still won't have room for fighter bays though, but the guns will make it formidable nonetheless.

Image

This view lets you see how wide the hull will be. It's going from 12 studs at its widest to 18. This will let the interior hall that is here go from 4 and 6 wide to 8 and 14 wide. The big window things will stay where they are. They look pretty cool. I will also end up expanding the bridge to have separate sections.

That's about it. ;o

Looks like the Battle in Caid Sector is having a widening effect all over, drawing other nations into a Naval Arms Race. Excellent. (Nice write up Natalya) I'm looking forward to seeing the new Sonks retrofit when completed.

Yea, before the Hodgepodge my ship was the strongest, and all was good... Well now after seeing Stana's whole fleet, i prettymuch got scared, so I'm gonna get myself the best capital ship once more, to make up for my lack of enough support ships. It's easier to retrofit the Sonks than it would be to build more fighters or something. Probably more effective as well since it will go from being weak when fighting a big fleet to strong when fighting a big fleet.

The Caid Sector Engagement is having some awesome repercussions. I've yet to design or attempt a Capital ship yet but with all the buzz Roc and Strana have caused I'm getting the itch to build. Sadly I need more flats, unless I wreck the base I have in mid production.

If the Sonks is to be stronger in Capital Ship combat, aren't you worried about the 12 fighters the Hodgepodge can field?

I'm not gonna sacrifice its current anti-fighter capabilities. In the Death War it had trouble against the Czech Vostoks, but those were normal starfighters with size rating 6. The Hodgepodge only fields ultra-light starfighters with like a size rating of 2 or 3 so they are easy pickings.

nice modifications so far, i know you don't have space for fighters but did you ever think of breaching pods, there not very large and hold 1 man per hollow section, they might be a better fit, especially in you expanded section soon to be dedicated to sleeping quarters

I'm gonna have to get working on the Marx's Revenge if i want to catch up in the capitol ship wars.

I should post pics of the new redesigned Battlecruiser Shapiro.

112" of guns, a giant death ray, shields, a fighter bay with two fighters and a bomber, fully stocked torpedo bay, crew of 16 and best of all...

how long is the shapiro cause if it has 112" of weapons means its 56" long which is then larger than the hodgepodge if your following the rules, that is

When you say 112", do you mean studs, or is this thing over 9 feet long?

*whistles*

This will be awesome when finished. The sleek, wicked look of this ship is going to get even better if the pics are any indication.
