Is there a technique for this? I just accidentally broke off the minifig arm 2 hours ago. Each time I attempt to retach it my thumbs start hurting and I have to stop.

if anything needs a technique, it's definitely "removing minifig legs". i swear, i almost rip my fingers apart trying to change leg/waist combinations.

all of these problems can be solved by using your teeth or the severed teeth of your enemies.

Actually, I've never had a problem removing minifig arms or legs. I've been rippin 'em off for so many years I just kind of do it now. For arms, I go in at a slight angle, then straight and push. It helps to attach the hand first. For legs, move both legs as far apart away from each other as possible, the grab and pull while twisting. It helps to attach a torso/shirt first also.
And teeth are VERY useful, I don't know where I'd be today without my teeth. Jaw muscles are powerful, and if you grab a stud or something and clench down with your teeth and pull with your hands and head, it's very easy to pull anything apart. I've never had to buy a brick remover, and even if you guys don't use your teeth, don't buy one. A butter knife works just as well.
Also, teeth aren't severed from their enemies. They're pulled, ripped, or yanked.

Some beer bottles are not twist off, you need an opener. So of course this guy I know tries to use his teeth because we've seen it on tv.
So yeah, he chipped a tooth.

I would rather use a brick remover than my teeth, because I would hate to dent my bricks. I also have 4.

what part of "doesn't twist off" did you miss?
anyways, everyone uses teeth, but you never, NEVER do it in front of someone. EVER.
