I called it that because it's the default page you get sent to, but I understand what you're saying. Do you suppose I could call it Main since it is the main page, or should it definitely be called News?

"Main" is ok too.
There are many sites that have their news on the first page, like Brikwars.

I know index is the default, but index would indicate a list of links as the main body of the page.
I suppose back in the 1980s that's what it was.

An index of the site would have a list of links to each page in the site.
That is sometimes called Site Index or Site Map.

I'm not an expert or anything.
I've only done 3 web sites, it just looked odd to me.

I would try to stay away from using many different fonts. Try and keep it as uniform as possible. Pick 2 or 3 tops for the whole site - this includes your banner. Right now I count your banner, the serif font below that, the red links which are a bold or larger size, and then the descriptive text, which is your base font. At least the links and the description text are the same font just in different sizes. Also, don't mix serifs and sans-serifs - it usually doesn't look good. At least change the one beneath your banner.

Okay I changed the one under the banner to be sans-serif.

I think it looks pretty good. You can tell the whole website was coded by one person and is not a template, not that it's a bad thing, the website looks nice.
