Ok, it's time to try this out.

A long time ago, in a fantasy world not completely different from any other, there was an earthquake.

The earthquake destroyed an impassable mountain range, opening up a previously unknown valley for settlers. But the rulers of the surrounding realms decided to only allow a few settlers in at first, to make sure the area was safe and not completely unplaya - um, unsettlable.

This is what the valley looks like (now a great work of art thanks to Olothontor):

Image

Light green regions (hexes) are plains, dark green regions are forests, brown regions are mountains. The blue lines are rivers.

Creating a character

Your character has 10 HP and 10 skill points. The skill points can be spent on any skills you want, as long as they are not too generic (eg. "Swordsman" is fine, "Warrior" is not). A skill can have between 1 and 4 points. The skill points can also be spent to increase your HP.

If you want to be a mage, every spell is its own skill.

Specify your characters name, gender and sexual preferences (needed for certain monsters).

The GM (me) will give you equipment based on your character's skills.

The Rules

The full rules-in-progress can be read in this thread. The basic rules are as follows.

You get three actions a day.

Your character can do three actions every day. The following things consume 1 action each:

-Moving from one region to another (you can only move to numbered regions).
-Gathering resources (cutting wood, mining, etc).
-Prospecting a region (learning about its attributes).
-Crafting something.
-Building a house.
-Hunting animals.
-Looking for trouble (finding monsters to fight).
-Entering a monster lair.

The following things are free:

-Buying or selling stuff.
-Placing and collecting bounties.
-Setting and gathering taxes.
-Casting spells (up to 3 per day; any further spells cost 1 action each).

All characters start in the region marked "A" on the map. Their first action must be to move to a different region.

You must eat a food ration every day.

If you have any food rations, you will automatically (no need to post it) eat one at the end of every day that your character did something. This lets you regain 1 HP. If you don't have any food rations, you lose 1 HP. Eating more than one food ration has no extra effect.

You can post a new set of actions as soon as the GM has posted the result of your previous ones.

The GM will try to post action results once per day.

When posting actions, start the post with your character's name in bold, and write the actions below it.

Code: Select all

This how you write bold text
This is how you write bold text

You can have up to three characters...

...but start with only one, and create another if you feel you need it.

---

Of course, since this is a beta, we will be making up a lot of the rules as we go along.

Signup

Signup is closed for now but more and more people will be added to as beta testing proceeds, eventually an unlimited number of players will be allowed. Post in the thread to be put on the waiting list.

Swords +1
Stealth +1

Also: I suggest we add race and class, even if they don't do anything at this point. We could use the race and class build templates from artd, or something similar.
I don't level the playing field, I level the playing field.

Looking good. thade and mgb519, what exactly does "survival" mean? And Ross, could you specify "craftsman" and "woodsman"?

"Strength" and "endurance" are too broad. "Intimidate" is fine, but since it's a social skill it might be hard to use against other players. Will still work on monsters though.

Woodsman would be the same as lumberjack, while craftsman would build items that are needed for buildings, like desks and beds and the like.
