GitS 2015
So, I went to a physical cinema in another state to watch this thing, the way our ancestors enjoyed films, and I only knew this film existed two days ago, when I saw a youtube ad about it.
I feel like it's about the same quality as the good episodes of Arise, and it adds the missing third link about as well as a prequel can.
By the time I saw the silly after-credits scene and finished my cup of tea, I felt like the series had just had a bow neatly tied around it.
I don't think there should be any more GitS featuring Mokoto anymore, I think we are already slightly on the side of too much detail and explanation. I guess whoever has the IP to GitS recognizes it too, since they approved that live action thing for 2017, which looks like it'll be crap. I am just now returned from place, and the film is fresh in my mind. No doubt after a few days have gone by, and I have re-read the wiki article, I will have a different impression, but such is the impression I have now.
Have any of you seen it? I think Natalya, you seem like you would be part of the audience for this thing.

Right? That was my reaction too, which is why I went to the theatre instead of just watching it through some other channel. I was just taken by surprise, being told there was a new film just at the time of its release. Normally I am aware of these things months ahead of time.Natalya wrote:Wait there's a 2015 GitS movie?

I don't care whether it was good or not, only that Keldoclock had a good time (because he is my friend).

No, it's a prequel, I think literally as well but certainly as far as themes go it's a prequel.Quantumsurfer wrote:I understand it's a reimagining?
The Arise series has its own art style, if that's what you mean. If you're going to watch it, AFAIK the last day it'll be in american theatres is tomorrow, but it'll probably show up on the pirate sites eventually.

I'm going to see it tomorrow night, which I think is the only night it's going to be in Canada.

Re: GitS 2015
Okay, saw it, and posted this review on another forum I go to, so it might sound a little OOC but whatever:
Natalya wrote:Review -- I'm going to go full weaboo here, but no spoilers:
It felt like an extended episode of 2nd-Gig, except it was part of the Arise continuity. For people who have only seen the original GitS movie, this one doesn't really compare. The original is a stand-alone artistic masterpiece while this one is, IMO, just an extension of the newest series. I give it a 3 out of 5, it was a little less, I don't know, mature? than some of the other stuff in the series. The main problem however was the plot was a little more convoluted than it had to be. With GitS things usually ARE convoluted, like you sort-of expect that from the show, but trying to cram that sort of plot into only 100 minutes leaves the viewer a little behind.
But, the thing is we're comparing a reboot movie of a reboot series to what critics (as far as I can tell) consider to be either the #2 or #3 anime of the entire 1990's. This one was made by the same production company, sure, but all the people involved are different (director, writer, voice actors...) and the universe has already been explored so the movie just wasn't going to have a chance.
I feel like more could be done with the franchise, but this movie wasn't made to explore the uncharted waters of the 2030's in the same way the first one did. I mean, the first one directly inspired The Matrix, even right down to the architecture of some of the sets, but this one didn't do anything we haven't seen before and probably won't be the inspiration for much else.

Re: GitS 2015
Really? In what direction? Do you mean by changing the characters and setting? At that point it's no longer GitS. I think we have basically done everything there is to do, and it is time now to close this book and move on to another.Natalya wrote: I feel like more could be done with the franchise
