Happy 2018 everybody! In the interest of making the rulebook a little more print-friendly, I've been streamlining the existing rulebook to have a smoother learning curve and to focus a lot more heavily on Collision rules since those are everyone's favorite part. The current plan is to split it up into two books: Book 1: Collision Rules, and Book 2: More Collision Rules.
Here's the framing narrative to set up the book. Text only for now, illustrations still to come:
http://brikwars.com/rules/draft/brikpocalypse.htm
And I've uploaded chapters 1 through 6 to give an idea of the new direction, starting here:
http://brikwars.com/rules/draft/1.htm
You'll see a lot of the same stuff as in 2010, but with the rough edges all sanded away so that only the most important thing remains, which is Collisions. (Not the advanced section of More Collisions yet, because I'm still sorting all that out.)
Anyway start your feedback engines, here we go.

Looks like that minifig has been testing collisions.
Nice Brikpocalypse story!

Sweet! Thanks Stubs!
I see that you changed some body armor penalties. Now it's only the swimming restriction. What was your reasoning behind deleting jump penalties?

I've never played or seen a game where that detail made it more fun, so it was just a wasted extra thing to have to remember for no real benefit.
A lot of the stuff I chopped out was like that. A lot of the rest is just getting moved to a later position in the rulebook. I'm trying to make the entry ramp into the game a lot smoother and more friendly to new players.

- I'd like to nominate close combat counters for a later spot in the rulebook. It's a lot of steps (and potentially a lot of dice rolls) to go through just to have a minifig whack another minifig, if both are armed.
- Armor Piercing is a weird name since it's more about piercing Deflection than the stat called Armor.
- Deflection itself might be a "later spot" nomination too if new players have a hard time grasping it or finding ways to overcome it.
- I think the first chapter could use some talk about the best conditions for a battle. Like, how many players can you comfortably have? Can you play while drinking? Can you play with kids? What's a good size for the armies?
- First chapter is otherwise very nice, establishing the essential stuff.

- You may be right about Close Combat in the basic rules. I haven't been super happy about the level of bog-down there. There are a couple of options I've been considering along these lines.
The first is eliminating Counterattacks (except on Withdrawing), and declaring that only Shields can be used to Parry attack damage.
The second is the same, but eliminating Shoves entirely, and saving Grabs for the advanced rules, when you get large creatures who make better use of them.
Third is saving Weapon Parries and Counterattacks for a special Duel mode, available to a dedicated Close Combat Specialist, to Heroes, and maybe to a Last Man Standing minifig.
- Right now it's called Armor Piercing because people are familiar with that term in regular life. Deflection Piercing is less immediately intuitive. I am reviewing all the names for everything though (as seen with Skill).
- I'm going to sort of introduce a lot of the stuff about players in a foreword about the community, but I've been trying to get an angle on it for years without much luck. I painted the Four Rums painting to act as the header, to give an idea of how long I've been working on it.
But more of that could go into the first chapter as well, depending on what ends up in the community intro.

I think so. Mechanically it's my favorite part of the book.

A quick revision today, sort of per Arkbrik's suggestion. Regular minifigs can perform one type of close combat maneuver per turn. Targets of Attacks or Counterattacks can only parry them with a Shield, and opponents now only get Counterattacks if you try to disengage, not after every maneuver.
For Heroes, Close Combat works the same way it did before. They keep all the cinematic maneuvers that regular minifigs lost, in a very brief new section 6.5: Dueling.

Chapter H is now uploaded:

Please ignore the out-of-date card graphics for now in chapters 6 and H.

So Manly Santa snuggling a corpse isn't a clever strategy to get attention on the evening news?
An ordinary minifigs
Just thought I'd point that out.
Glad to see the book is getting a do-over, I'll have to take a look through it while it's getting updated. I kind of gave up on 2010 because it was starting to feel like what everyone said 2001 was like with all the additions, so I'm looking forward to how this gets refined.
Slightly irrelevant question: Is 2010 considered finished in its current state? Or has it been abandoned in favor of 2018? Or is 2018 going to become 2010 when it's done?

2010 is finished apart from chapter 11, although I'm reserving the right to go back in and edit stuff as needed. I'll use the stuff from the 2018 version of chapter 11 to fill in the missing parts of 2010.
2018 is going to end up having most of the same stuff 2010 did, except smoothed down a little and broken down into more bite-sized chunks. Kind of like what I just did to Close Combat.

I think the bits about the community and forums should be at the end of the book, as a "hey, look at the possibilities of brikwars " kind of thing.

I'm having a tough time placing it, because I want an early "look at the community possibilities" like making custom minifigs, sharing models, heckling colette, etc. as much as the late "look at the community possibilities" like ZZD and getting murdered by warhead. In the end maybe it has to be broken into two sections. I've tabled it for now while I'm working on the actual rules part of the rules, since I haven't made much headway on it.

I like manuals that have Goofus- and Gallant-like characters to highlight concepts. Maybe you can make "Lurker" who just likes looking at cool creations and "Moderator" who routinely stomps scrubs in forum battles?
I make apocalypses and apocalypse accessories.
