Need thoughts on a WIP.

So since last year I've had a dropship around in one WIP form or another. It has kind of become an unhealthy obsession trying to get one complete. I'd come to this rough design, and the bricklink order to complete it arrived today, but I am uncertain. It has some aspects I like, but just doesn't do anything for me.

Image

It's a 21" monster of a dropship. It's to have fully vectoring wings and engines (The gears are currently removed, but you can see the simple mechanism for the main wings. It has side and rear hatches, providing excellent troop access to a decent sized bay, that also has room for two extra gunners alongside the pilot and copilot. Which will be needed for the large missiles that'll be mounted on the wings.

Problems are simple. This is the third redesign, but furthest along in construction (about 80% done). Wings have been recycled through all three WIPs as the only part I am truly happy with. It feels too boxy, but I am not confident with sculpting on an aircraft this size. I already have structural issues around the side doors, and that is after adding a hefty technic undercarriage to help support it.

So I don't know really. I guess I'm wrestling my frustration and "sunk time" of wanting to complete the model while also smashing to bastard to bits. I have a tank base ready and waiting for some parts. And my mind thinks I could turn what remains into a much smaller dropship. The model is both a parts hog, and would be a points hog on the board. Assuming it could fit on a board.

I mean its cool that its so big and all, but whats the point?

its gonna take up so much of the battlefield that any troops who got in could exit after it just flipped around

whats more those precious parts could be used to make such cool stuff that you could actually use

I like it. :studgod: I think the concept is pretty cool and worth at least one more try. My process is similar to yours - build, scrap everything but the good stuff, do something else for a while, revisit, rinse, repeat. Eventually you do get to something you like.

After I built a SHIP for the Imperial Magikstrate I thought similarly, what's the point? I can't really use it in a battle only a set/ display piece. After that I basically said I'd only build models that could actually be used in a battle. I'm biased and lean towards that. Rip up the sucker to make a useable tank and drop ship! Save the giant dick measure contest creations for LDD.

Yeah. Back when I did my SHIP, I had the similar feeling. The model seemed entirely useless for Brikwars, and wasn't exactly an awesome display, although that was down to me being an inexperienced builder biting off more than I could chew.

And now parts from that SHIP are found in most of models, mostly the 6x10 panels.

Still, size and usability is relative. PARV answered the question of "Is a model ever too big for Brikwars" well over a decade ago. If me and my fellow Britwarriors got their shit together and we had proper fights like the yanks have done, then I'd want a monster of a flying fortress to carry my elite infantry into battle, all while dropping hot sticky MkVI missiles on the enemy infantry below. Anything else is just going to get alpha'd off the field.

I don't think I'll ever be able to leave the concept behind. A flying fortress heavily armed and filled with infantry. A bigger model would allow me one last shot at the most awesome version of that vision. But I'd have to cast aside any hopes of building other Praetorian models for some time. Still, it is not like I am short for models as it is.

Ha. Who said that wasn't the part of the idea. So silly, and yet so effective.

I really like the ships a giant tanks you all build. I have yet to see a bad one. You make a good point to it not really being usable, that is one reason I stick to mechs and minifigs. That and if it isn't able to picked up and shook it wont survive at my house.
