The first thing to pop into my mind was Hetzer.
But the barrel isn't long enough, so its something else, like a short barrel Stug.

Had a random fit of inspiration while sorting out my never-ending stash of bricks.

I really like that drilling platform. I'll have to copy that for my desert planet outpost.
Re: Lego doodles POST THEM
So my son and I build a bit now and then. Mostly he nags me to play, and I want to build. It's a compromise.
He builds a bit but it's still very basic, even though he can follow an instruction.
But he likes to create characters. Thought I'd post some.
That last skeleton is him. We can play whatever, but that skeleton is always there. Sometimes it has six arms, sometimes that golden armour and maybe it's not totally clear that it's him, but that skeleton always wins. It dodges everything, has prior knowledge of all traps, countermeasures to all secret weapons and knows all it's enemies weaknesses. And it can fly, or bury underground to avoid any danger. It's a beast.
Bonus image when he noted me taking pictures, he wanted to pose his crew:

Thanks, I found those tower bricks and got inspired. Also, an overabundance of LEGO Technic parts.
I like your son's ideas, and I can totally get behind his skeleton 'self-insert' character. I got one of those of my own, I just never throw mine into any combat but let him get all his things and victories through deus ex machinas and self-serving storytelling. Where are those transparent neon green legs from?
Re: Lego doodles POST THEM
The fact you can really see it´s a working drill makes it cool. Since I notice my son really likes funcionality in sets (hidden compartments, moving parts) I appreciate them a lot more but have a hard time constructing them myself. I've made a set of doors I like, but other than that I'm looking for inspiration and this drill was great.
They're from the ninjago line that had a theme with a ghost world a few years back. We found them in a mixed lot I bought.

Crammed deep within the sweaty, flabby folds of the BrikVerse rests a tiny crumb of multiverse-molesting mayhem called the Nether Lands. Currently ruled over by a single mad Human, its citizens all live under its chaotic and twisted whims which have a tendency to change based on the position of Uranus and whether or not Venus is shagging the Moon that night. It rests on a 12-hour difference with most normal galaxies, creating an awkward time difference between them and causing odd behavior in most of its residents.
Tried my hand at map-making, and since I already invented the Nether Lands earlier for the origin story of Rainbow Inches I decided to visualize the whole thing.
