By preventing it from moving thus depriving it of a flow of water across the gills which it can draw oxygen from.

Errr maybe you know HOLDING IT STILL!

I know that you can kill sharks by pulling them backwards and as such removeing the water flow from their gills, but it would take a long tug.

Empty oil drum with hook and bait attached. Drop in sea and shark eats bait, gets hooked and can't swim properly. Apparently it drowns. Same with certain fishing nets.

During WWII the Westminster thought Scottish shark meat would make an excellent food substitute for the nation. So, under orders the sharks were killed and butchered and packed in ice and sent down to England by train. Only trouble was the shark meat was still twitching 24 hours later...

Of course you might wonder what that has to do with anything, and you'd be right to wonder.
