StarCorps - Invasion

The Magic SOB forum is for posts of story sequences that are frequently vignette-based. Put those here while actual battle reports can go in Reports From the Field.
You must talk like James T. Kirk in this forum at all times. Leonard Nimoy is fine too.

StarCorps - Invasion

Post by MadMario » Sat May 09, 2020 4:53 pm

Chapter One

Image
The Archives of Ikan, found recently by StarCorps scientists, fought over in a fraught battle, emptied of any exploitable teknology (at least the scientists thought so) and subsequently sealed. Waiting to be abandoned once again. One last soldier is waiting for the last dropship, which will take him and the few remaining supplies back to the farther outpost...

Image
"hmm, hmmm dummmm dadummm dudamm... jeez, how long can it take one dropship to come over here? I´m waiting like forever..."

Image
"...at least it´s an easy day. Like a day off, actually. Hard to believe I´m getting paid for this..."

Image
"It´s getting a bit boring, on the other hand... wait - wasn´t that hand bigger yesterday? Did I always have so tiny hands?"

Image
"Nah, this hand is the same like always. I must be imagining things. This boring mission makes my brain..."

*malfunction!*

???

Image
*unexpected subject in operation area. captivate. bring to interrogation room.*

*affirmative.*

"Hey, leave me alone! Let go! Who the flark are you guys anyway?"

Image
*subject speaks spaceman-standard-language. execute basic information routine.*

"What the actual F*$k???"

*you are of inferior quality. your systems are working inefficiently. yet your ABS can be rearranged into a more efficient form. which will be done now. opposition is useless.*

Image
"You gotta be f%&king kidding me! Who do you think you are, Beings Of Ridiculous Kybernetiks?"

*If this denomination comforts you, use it. you can also use the acronym "B.O.R.K.". It´s more effective than using the full denomination.*

"Great! With that being clarified, GET YOUR F*$KING HANDS OFF ME NOW!"

*negative.*

Image
The voices die away as the beings get deeper into the pit. Soon there´s only muffled screams and metallic screeches, like a desperate fight going on between unequal foes. After many, many minutes there are footsteps closing in from within the main corridor...

Image
...and the totally exhausted looking soldier stumbles back to the daylight. He seems confused. Then, all of a sudden, he straightens up, as if somebody turned a switch or something...

Image
...which is a distressingly accurate paraphrase, for he now has several switches he did´t have before. Meet the newest member of the BORK-Kollective...

*implementing software routines... updating - app 234 of 278, please wait.... update complete.*

Image
*drone fully integrated into kollective. political, military and geographical informations implemented. re-evaluating course of action.*

*change of primary target. repurposing command center. beginning nanobot realignment sequence. building transport ships.*

Image
A buzzing sound - like of a million small insects - begins to fill the air. Behind the drones that leave the corridor appear some accurately straight lines of... matter. It looks like the walls, the floor and the roof are slowly dissolving and rearranging to another form... This must be this "nanobot realignment" that the previous caption spoke of...

Image
*estimated time to finishing realignment: 1 standard hour.*

*affirmative. activating the rest of this base´s drones. calling other bases. searching for adequate ship design in database.*

"error 404, no access to ship designs yet. only basic geometrical structures available.*

Image
*that will have to do. Zero-Zero can design us a fancy ship later on. or we incorporate a shipyard on the way. there are several options.*

*affirmative.*

More and more of the strange black stripes cover the ground, as they begin to form... ingot-shaped ships out of the former building. Meanwhile, more drones come out of the pit, immediately manning the freshly formed means of transport...

Image
*estimated time to finishing realignment: 30 standard minutes. calculations allow five ships. all drones will fit. new destination: Cyran II. homeworld of StarCorp. LLC. primary mission objective: retrieval of Zero-One.*

*affirmative.*

*affirmative.*

*affirmative.*

You have definitely outdone me on the sheer creepiness factor. Congratulations!

Now to cleanse that entire world to avoid further contamination.

Chapter Two

Image
On a small nameless moon somewhere near the Cyran system (the StarCorp. LLC homeworld), lies a peaceful settlement.

Image
Only few housings and settlers are there, as well as a BOCKSY Corp. Automated Field Marketplace that dropped some years ago, but due to a malfunction never opened its door...

Image
The people end their daily work right now, putting the farming tools in the shed, looking forward to their afterwork pints.

Image
Some are already enjoying theirs, happy with their everyday lifes, talking about todays events...

Image
...when one of the farmers suddenly hears an unfamiliar and ominous sound...

Image
SWOOOOSH!

Image
CRASH! - a small, ingot-shaped vessel crash-landed on the settlement´s border, and the settlers run towards the wreckage to see if anyone´s still alive.

Image
But shortly after, mechanical sounds and metallic screeches come from the wreck, as several biomechanical creatures - BORK-drones - crawl out of it.

Image
Farmer Frank: "Well, it seems these spacefarers don´t need medical attendance, so I guess we´ll just say hi?"

Image
*error - planet surface not matching to recordings.*
*obviously a navigation problem. analyze surroundings. need replacement for irreparable ship.*
*inferior quality lifeforms detected. prepare for ABS-rearrangement.*

"Rearrangement? Yup, call me impolite, but that doesn´t sound good to me. SECURITY DRONES, ACTIVATE!"

Image
On a docking station near the toolshed, two MKIII security drones rest on their inductive charge fields.

Image
*clik* *clik* - As soon as they hear the settlers command, the drones arise and approach the origin of danger.

Image
*possible threat detected. setting new priorities*
*affirmative. termination of security measures. rearrangement or termination of inferior lifeforms.*
*affirmative*

"Oh dear, does anyone else have a feeling of being in deep, deep trouble right now...?"

Chapter Three

Image
Shortly after the BORK drones clashed with the civilians of a blue moon, the remaining drones stride the deserted village, still searching a replacement for their crashed ship.

*search routine finished. there is enough building material, but we still need building plans for repairs or constructions.*

*Unfavorable. Odds are very small that such things will appear right before our sensors.*

Image
*Fizzzzzz*
The door of the idle building suddenly releases the locks, propably activated from the battle´s vibrations somehow.
A jolly jingle sounds out, and an automated salesman voice immediately starts to address the "customers".

"Hello and welcome to the BOCKSY Corp. experience!"

Image
"BOCKSY Corp. is your one-stop supplier for all your spacefaring needs! From ships to surface bases - you need it, we have it!"

The drones curiously enter the salesroom, evaluating the newly available informations.

Image
"And don´t miss our special offers! This month, for every BOCKSY ship you order, get 2 BOCKSY drones (light) for free! while supplies last, colors may vary"

One of the drones looks at the computer terminals for ordering, and easily gets access to the database.

*excellent, so many blueprints. these algorithms are not even crypted. begin download.*

Image
*begin nanobot realignment sequence. with the raw material here we can repair our ship and construct at least one larger one.*

*i know of several settlements on the route. we can rearrange more drones there before heading to the Cyran system.*

*excellent. But remember, there is no more "i", member #3.015.978.482. there´s only "we" in the kollective*

Image
*i´m sorry. err, i mean... WE mean, WE are sorry.*

*better. the next thing to learn is not to be sorry. or have any feelings at all. we don´t need those. after the next realignment cycle this should be rectified.*

Image
*here is a good location to start. begin building BOCKSY ship design #2232: basic gunboat frame, minimal interior.*

Image
The drones stand idle as the nanobots swarm out to collect and rearrange materials from all over the battlefield into useful building material for a new ship, while simultaneously repairing the small ingot with the same technique.

Image
The concrete and steel of the houses are the first choice for raw material. The nanobots disintegrate the walls on a molecular level, and transport the matter along the network of nanobot roads quickly to the point where they´re needed. Like ants on an anthill, but way more efficient.

Image
And soon, the small ship is repaired and the new ship almost ready.

*begin boarding the ingot. set coordinates to one of the settlements that member #3.015.978.482 mentioned. some of us board the new ship and meet up with the rest there.*

*affirmative.*

Image
And soon another BORK ship is ready to serve the hive. the engines fire up as soon as all drones boarded their assigned ships...

Image
...as they set course to meet up with the other ships in orbit, and then to inroad some other settlements along their way to the StarCorp. LLC homeworld...

Image
...and in the village that´s now - supposedly - deserted, a pair of scared eyes observes the ships taking off.

Chapter Four

Image
A squad of StarCorps Troopers strives the fields of an unnamed blue moon. They reach the borders of an obviously deserted settlement.

Cpt. Braxton: "Stop here! That looks like the traces we saw on Ikan."

Image
Braxton kneels down to examine one of the black lines that stretch across large parts of the settlement.

"The surface structure is exactly the same. Hard to believe that these are remains of deactivated nano-robots, but the science corps was serious about it."

Trooper: "But Sir, what does that mean?"

Image
"This means that the same force that took apart the Ikan archives has been here, and also this technology was used to rearrange materials into something else. The energy signatures showed that several small ships started shortly after the archive building was deconstructed."

"So whoever did this formed starships out of the walls and then came here?"

"Possible. That´s why we were ordered to respond the emergency signal and examine the surroundings. If we find similar energy signatures here, we know for sure."

"Still leaves the question why this farmville was the target..."

"Also part of our mission to find that out."

Image
"Captain! Movement, over there!"

"Everyone in position! - You! Stop right there! Identify!"

Image
A woman steps slowly out of the doorframe, anxiously eyeing up the Troopers that surrounded the house by now.

"Your voices sound non-mechanical... are... are they gone?"

"Is who gone? Are you alone? Step forward, but slowly."

"Don´t shoot, I´m unarmed. We are - we were just.. farmers. Are they gone?"

Image
The troopers quickly realize that the woman is shocked, and that she presents no danger to them. They have her sit down in front of the house, and one of them fetches a cup of water from the nearby well.

"Easy, lady. We´re from StarCorps, and here to help. We´ve received a standard distress call. The type that is sent out when the security drones of a settlement are activated. We just came here, and as far as I can tell, we and you are the only ones here."

Image
"So they´re gone. They´ve taken Frank with them. And the others... dead... everyone."

"Can you tell me who has done this to your friends?"

"They... look like minifigs, but talk like machines...like cyborgs. They killed some of us with ease, and Frank... I don´t really know what they did with him, but he suddenly behaved like them, talked like them. In this strange, computerized voice..."

"These... cyborgs. Did they say anything about their objectives? What do they want? Where are they going?"

Image
The woman breaks out in tears.

"I..don´t know... All I can remember is that ship that suddenly grew out of nowhere, and... they said something about a planet called... Siren? Sauron?"

"Cyran?"

"Yeah, that´s it. Cyran."

"Oh, for flarks sake!"

Image

"We have to go. Now! Sarge, get me a connection to Cyran immediately!"

"What about her?"

"She comes with us, she´s not safe here. She can stay on our base until we find a settlement where she can go."

"Aye, Sir!"

"They´re heading to Cyran for whatever reason. Dammit, Welfare will not be happy about those news. I sense we have a serious problem now!"
