Few people are aware of how 501stCadians first came into being. However, half-forgotten rumours suggest that he was created as a clone of Blitzen during the G.R. 2,008. Exactly why this happened is unknown, but it is possible that his mystic creators had foreseen the coming of Silvadream and attempted to clone Blitzen in response to this. Or maybe it was just koincidence.
Anyways, the cloning didn't go very well and 501stCadians was sent to a remote planet called Cadia. There he was, by the will of the people and himself, given command of their 501st regiment. And from these soldiers he took his name. The 501st regiment is renowned for it's Mountaineering and Orbital Assault abilities, along with the incredibly mobility of it's forces.
