I would just like to point out that the database does not provide an API.An API must include functions and/or classes not defined in the "vanilla" language, which a database cannot supply, because it only contains data, not function(or class) definitions. So please colette, pick a better word? I suppose database wouldn't be the best, because you already used it, but if you so want to keep things scientifically correct, please use a a correct word.

TL;DR: API is not the correct word to use, pick something else.

"In addition to accessing databases or computer hardware, such as hard disk drives or video cards, an API can be used to ease the work of programming graphical user interface components, to allow integration of new features into existing applications (a so-called "plug-in API"), or to share data between otherwise distinct applications." from Wikipedia.

It's just a phrasing issue. The database itself obviously doesn't provide the API, but the BlueGene company does so that other people can access it and do shit with it. It's a grammatical/syntax issue, not a scientific error.

API is probably a misnomer in any case, a super-advanced TL 7 genetics database would in all likelihood use some unfathomably alien and different computing paradigm. I'm just trying to stick to familiar terminology to convey the idea.

Fair enough.
