I like the front of your second build better, but it does lose something with the lack of forward-swept wings. Perhaps a merger of the two designs would seal the deal.

Well, it might be the lighting and the pilot's gear, but the first one gives me more of a classic sci-fi type of vibe. Makes me think of the early Lego Space sets for some reason.
The second one, aside from looking like a Dirt Devil, is curvier, which presents a newer feel to it.
