The "Look at this!" Bricks Thread

If you look at the blue parts surrounding the logo I used a technique which was also used for the ocean in this picture where I had cut one big blue piece for the front of Benny's body and then Julie drew on the CS Logo and then I just cut lines around the logo where I would have to chip a bit out, but it was all done from one piece instead of a bunch of different pieces. That means the cut lines down there are exact fits, which is why the lines in between are so thin. I had intended to have SOME grout in those lines around the logo, but I guess the gaps were too tight and none took. You can see on the Trans Am however that there are micro grout lines in the ocean where there are cut-outs for the trees and stuff. If you look at Major Kusanagi's face you can see the thin clean lines dividing it up... I used the same technique for those: use one big piece where possible and just cut it up then that way the grout lines will be super thin and unobtrusive.

Julie did almost all of the work for Benny's face, I only did one of the eyes and his tongue. You can see the top and right yellow pieces have a very thin grout line like my stuff, that's because she did cut those from the same piece. However, as for line placement, I just don't think she is at a point yet to consider the way the lines are going to look and to make them not do crazy things with your eyes and make it look awkward. Consider my original Major Kusanagi. Her nose was actually done differently before I finished it. I ended up digging a couple pieces out and replacing them so that the grout lines would go different directions and not be as distracting. Benny does have one such modification on his face actually. Originally, the top right piece was a big long rectangle-ish piece which went across the entire top all the way to the left, but I showed Julie that the grout line that would generate might end up making him look like he had a massive unibrow, so she cut the left side off of it and then used that triangular piece on the left. But yeah, big grout lines, and the rest of the lines might have been put in better places, it is definitely a fair criticism.

Someone else did this Erza mosaic. I have some leeway with the thickness of the grout lines, whereas for traditional stained glass artists have to deal with the fact that they have a minimum line thickness which is quite thicker than what I can pull off. Look how awkward her face looks. I almost would have not even given her a mouth if I was going to do her in this fashion. This artist probably didn't have a pair of these which is a mosaic tool not a stained glass tool. Using these improperly, I have been able to sort of chip out a concave cut into a piece of glass without shattering it. That's how I was able to do the sky for the Trans Am all in one piece even with the trees on the left, I used that tool in combination with a traditional glass cutter to get "chomp" out a concave portion for each of the trees to fit into. If the guy who did this Erza had them maybe he could have done a semi-circle under her mouth instead of having those awkward side cheek pieces, but I understand why he went with those, it would have looked even weirder without those if he made a mouth that just split the face directly in half like Terrance and Phillip.

Anyway I could probably write a book with all the stuff I've learned over the last year and a half of doing glass art, and I'm still a novice.

Just had an idea.
The unibrow fits her mood, keep that and the eyes.
Then do the glass face below in one big piece.
Then maybe this is possible- cut up one of those metal bits to form a separate nose and mouth and glue them on top of the glass.
They could just sit in mid glass not touching an edge because its cheating.

I suppose the other way would to use that teknique where you paint on the glass.

Edit: That doesn't mean I want to see pictures of all your DIY adventures erecting the neighbours' decking guys, but special cases may be made for mosaics ( i.e when they depict a lego character).
