Re: 2012 sets
The Lego site just updated and are selling the Friends line. Frankly, they look amazing; tons of accessories, several new colors, and a lot of sets are cheap! The mini-doll could be used for something in Brikwars too, I bet.
I'm definitely heading back to the Lego store and getting some of these. Best series of the new year, so far.

Oh man, I've seen the estimated prices of those sets in my native currency, at the cheapest webshop in Hungary. Gandalf Cart 18$, okay, Uruk-Hai army 50$, oooookay, Helm's Deep over 200$.
Guess which sets I ain't buying this year!

Of course, I'm more of a Town builder now-a-days, but I can see the Brikwars potential.

(the big bold numbers on the bottom is the price tag; If you wanna do a quick conversion, divide that amount with 250 for US dollar, and 370 for british pounds)
I'm blaming the nosediving homeland currency and that VAT has increased from 25% to 27%.
EDit: okay, apparently I'm awful at maths, it's "only" about 150$

Re: 2012 sets
Well, that's not hugely different from most large lego sets right? At any rate, it's too much for me to spend on one thing, I won't be getting the huge-ish sets. Stuff like 'warg riders' sounds like it'll have a lot of interesting pieces though and every fantasyverse has place for a marauding band of orc raiders!
Something I've also noticed is that Lego's boxes are much bigger right now than they used to be: must be a merchandise tactic.

Re: 2012 sets
They can afford to charge really high prices because the adults shopping will *need* for their kids to have LotR toys growing up, and the kids will want Gandalf, having seen him in The Hobbit.

Re: 2012 sets
I've noticed is that most retail shops (Target, Wal-Mart, Toys R Us, etc.) use the oversized boxes that can fit much more in them than the set. However, the LEGO stores sometimes use much smaller, size efficent boxes.Bragallot wrote: Something I've also noticed is that Lego's boxes are much bigger right now than they used to be: must be a merchandise tactic.
The smallest Pirates of the Caribbean set: The Captain's Cabin, comes in the regular box size used for the Star Wars Battle Packs and $10-$13 sets when sold in retail shops, but the LEGO store sold it in boxes the size of what are usually the $6-8 dollar sets (less than half the size). This also was done to a number of other themes in the LEGO store, even Star Wars.
I guess that in the LEGO store, theres less competition between other toys that could seem better to a child because of their larger box size (IE: Mega Blox), and customers to the LEGO store usually know what they'd be getting rather than some idiot mom who walks into K-Mart and buys Best-Lock because it "looks bigger".
