I was going to buy some of these new minifigs, but after hearing this I am not. I am deeply disappointed in Lego for doing this. R.I.P ABS.

So have they stopped using ABS all together?

What has actually pushed TLG towards this shittier quality? I've noticed occasional lapses in quality in the few sets I've gotten over the last few years, but I thought LEGO had doubled down on their commitment to quality after the scare a few years ago.

Also, as lifelong Beatles fan, and someone who used to watch Yellow Submarine constantly, I am so hyped for that set.

Shit, are they getting rid of ABS in sets too? I thought it was just the Ninjago spinners and CMFs? :fist:

Honestly, I think it's for the best. ABS needs petroleum, so by using a new type of plastic, they're not doing as much damage to the environment.

Right, because Red China, has such a stellar environmental record. :tiger: /s

Who better to lead the way into a greener future than the country that made a river run red like a Biblical plague?

You think the shitty Chinese plastic uses what, exactly? Unicorn Ki-Rin farts & magic wishes? TLG isn't slated to fully "go green" until 2030. I guess until then all the tree-huggers will have to make do with what? Lincoln Logs?

They even said in the press-release
When the LEGO Group is ready to introduce new materials it is vital that it does not compromise the quality or safety standards set by the LEGO Group and expected by parents.
I've been a fan of LEGO's products b/c they've cultivated over decades a solid reputation for quality & reliability. I can take bricks from my collection that come from sets released in the 1980s & (wear & tear & abuse by previous owners notwithstanding) they still fit perfectly w/ bricks fresh off the shelf in [current year]. If "sustainable" ends up meaning "biodegradable", I don't want that from my LEGO bricks, b/c I intend to use them for years, & don't intend for them to ever go into the garbage. This had better not be more of that "planned obsolescence" bullshit that's been infesting business models in recent decades, b/c I will lose a lot of respect for TLG if that's the case.
What is a sustainable material?
There is no common definition of a sustainable material. Several aspects influence the sustainability of a material. It is to a high degree determined by its source, chemical composition, its use (in a product) and management (at end-of-life), and the impact it can have in both environmental and social areas.

As far as I know, it's all still ABS. ABS has different formulations and molding techniques. If lower-quality stuff is coming out of China (which I haven't heard anything about one way or the other), it may mean that they're using a different ABS formulation or methodology. It might even be environmental differences in temperature or humidity or even altitude pressure causing a different result. Plastics are finicky, and Lego goes to absurd lengths to hide their molding tech secrets. (I figure they just don't want anyone to find out that all true Lego pieces are summoned through some kind of hellmouth fed with the blood of abducted Mega Bloks employees).

Yup, they're not replacing anything just yet - there's an ongoing study whose focus is to find IF there's even a good alternative to begin with. Which makes sense - oil prices bumped and the demand for fresh bricks is greater than ever and only growing year by year.
Blindbags were always a bit what some may consider"below par" since wave 1 back in 2010 (part why I was against getting any but ultimately decided that was silly) so I don't know what the fuss is about. They're short release window, one&done run sets. That's part why they can afford so many wacky but often single-use molds while keeping them at cost.
