Forgive me if this has been covered before in some other thread (I haven’t trawled through all of them, and I’ve been away from the forum for a while - hate it when real-life impinges on your hobbies...), but I still feel that that the weapon ranges are way too short (weapon stats don’t seem to have changed from the “05 version). No mention of rules for Automatic weapons either (despite a lot being suggested in the forums).

Maybe I’m just accustomed to having played other game systems that have longer ranges (and let’s face it, the whole point of having guns is to be able to pick off the other guy before he gets close enough to bash you with that rock he’s holding... and that includes pistols).

I can understand the notion that having longer ranges means that guns would dominate the game, but that is kinda how it is in reality - when someone starts shooting you better get behind something solid or you’re toast. Although, in order to allow for more close combat mayhem (which after all, is a staple of Brikwars), I can see the need to pull back the ranges on minifig-held weapons (Those mounted on vehicles would be another story - and one we no doubt can discuss once the MOC rules come out). I can kinda see that using 6” for pistols keeps things close and tense - that in order to use one, you have to be within potential melee range of your target in their next turn (Move of 5” + the angry inch), so you better not miss. But still, six inches feels too short... (that’s what she said...). Even just a couple of inches added to the range of both classes would help.

I wonder if it also needs a way to accommodate extra long ranged weapons - like a sniper rifle. It seems a bit odd having a minifig armed with a sniper rifle that is longer than he is tall, but can only just reach targets that are a couple of dozen or so paces away (I figure that the average minifig must have a pace length of around a half inch... give or take...). The 2001 rules had a range of about 20” I think...

You can fire at things out of range with a -1 to skill and damage for every inch. The range restrictions are also in place probably for the sake of the size of battlefields. I don't think many people have the resources to make large, intricate battlefields.

Also, Brikwars is about awesome carnage, and although mowing people down with machine guns is carnage, but not as awesome.

And the weapons in the book are really only guidelines. You can make the range greater, it's just not in the book at this time. I've been trying to convince Stubby to make a "Create-a-weapon" chart, and hopefully he'll make it for us. We all have custom weapons, and it would be nice for them all to be standardized.

True, I'm all for the power of fudge and will likely house-rules the heck out of it anyway.

The option to shoot at out-of-range targets is a welcome addition, although the law of diminishing returns cuts in pretty fast (unless you start using bigger dice).

I've got a new idea for a variation on brikwars.

Calvin wars
It''s basically brikwars but with every rule replaced with either "what I says goes" or "Fudge".

1:"so how far can your units move?"
2:"10 inches"
1:"no, way! Lets check what the rules say!"
*1+2 roll for what I says goes.
2: "told you!"

Alternatively

Hammer wars

Each time theirs a rule disagreement the people who disagree must beat each other senseless using mallets.

Also in Calvin Wars, you can never use the same rule in more than one game. Plus you have to wear bandit masks over your eyes at all times.

Too late, VicWars already does it this way. Moronstudios has videos of their games at Gottacon: http://www.youtube.com/user/moronstudios

Question: Will the 2010 rulebook have a glossary?

If so, it would be the funniest glossary ever.

Sorry, in the middle of moving. Busy couple of months over here.

Chapter eight's been at the 98% mark since December, I've just been traveling every weekend and haven't had the spare time to get that last 2% in. Text is done except for the Heavy who needs a rewrite; I need to hack together minifig cards for him and the Gunner, though they'll probably get placeholder art for now. I just finished a big push to collect photos from the forum archives to use, although I might post the chapter first and add in the photos later.

Apart from putting ch8, live I want to add a section under the Heroes Chapter for the Cannon Fodder and Thrall units.
