Starting an army, any tips???

Post by mightymigs » Mon Apr 11, 2011 5:29 am

Hi, I am just starting an army and I have had no BrikWars experience before
so i was wondering if any1 could give me a few tips on army starting.

Links for cheap Lego minifigure sites would be accepted

Thanks :busted:

Bricklink would be the place to buy stuff. Proceed like this:

6. Decide what kind of army you want (modern, medieval, whatever)
7. Look at what you already have and try building something consistent from that
8. Decide on a colour scheme, if you managed to make something you like from what you already have you can go from there, otherwise I would browse in Bricklink to look at available pieces and their prices and choose pieces you think would go well together
9. If you're going space, try making some gun designs, they will make your army distinct and much cooler
10. Build some vehicles that go well together with the army.

:protip: Don't make a clone trooper army.

If you want some kind of ninja army, you should buy these.
But you will find good things from Briklink.

But welcome to the world of Brikwars!

Buying second hand down-on-their-luck minifigs can be a useful thing to do as a way to obtain lots of body parts without too much expense.

medium task-force
Large army

and then plan around that.
Remember you can always change the size

I have to disagree with you on this one. Some of the best armies I have seen were combinations of ideas from others assembled in a creative way.

The key to using other people's ideas is to be clear where the idea came from.

For example, I just added a chariot to my Orc army. I used an idea I found on the Classic Castle website. I adjusted it slightly to make it fit into the army and I will begiving the guys credit.

This is so true. Also keep in mind that you can take mini-figs from any line and take the paint off to make solid color bodies. Then use decals to make what ever you want/need for your army. :D

That's Lego mutilation, don't encourage it! Buy blank torso's if you want to decal stuff or simply print and put the paper on it, don't destroy the originals :?

LEGO mutilation

Post by Abaddon127 » Mon Apr 11, 2011 12:22 pm

I am not opposed to modifying LEGO elements in interesting and creative ways. I have always viewed LEGO as a creative outlet, and accordingly, I enjoy modifying my LEGO briks through cutting and glueing, and sometimes painting. I encourage you to find what works for you.

Oh Bragallot, Do not worry, I only do that when it is cheeper or when I can not get what I want as plain torsos.

For example, you can not find plain Sand Green, Bright Green, Orange, Light Flesh, or Pearl Gold torsos. Or take Dark Grey. Plane costs from .97 to $2.16 lowest prices listed depending on the hand colors. But I can by painted torsos and clean them off for as little as .36 to .80 cents each.

So while I understand your overreaction, I will continue to do it and show others how easy it can be.

well then it wouldn't be your army :rtfm: but no, I also agree w/ our resident hobo... getting ideas from other people on flickr, brickshelf, the forums, etc. is a great thing, just give credit where credit is due, and don't exactly copy them, that'll piss everyone off :D

Overreaction? Why would you make anything plain to just put another print on it anyway? I always worked with paper decals to cover the original ones so I didn't destroy anything permanently and could still take them off afterwards... And it works great.
