Vikings!

Post by Alex » Tue May 24, 2011 3:08 pm

The vikings are my largest lego army (partly due to finding the viking chess set for half off). I've got more 50 overall.
Image
I've divided my vikings into three main tribes/clans based on color :red, blue and green. The red vikings guard the fort, the blue vikings crew the big ship and the green vikings crew the small ship.
Image
This is the lower half of the fort with a house, blacksmith's forge and supply building.
Image
The upper half contains the mead hall where most of the feasting and drinking takes place.
Image
This is a slightly modified version of the viking longship that I made with an extra bank of oars and shields as well as two smaller ballistas instead of one big one. It also has about 4x the vikings as the original.
Image
The smaller boat is mostly for scouting and raiding instead of full scale battles.
Image
While most vikings find bows to be less honorable than melee weapons, they understand the importance of having some ranged troops. These archers also come equipped for close combat, and will prefer a good melee to ranged combat.
Image
The majority of viking warriors are melee troops.
Image
Veteran warriors become Huskarls, the elite body guards of the chieftains. They are distinguishable by their capes, horned helmets and better equipment, including two-handed axes.
Image
The strongest, bravest warriors are the berserkers, who spurn things like heavy armor and shields in order to wield their battle axes with maximum killing efficiency.
Image
The viking champion is Aln Redaxe (an anagram for Alexander), who is basically the viking version of the hulk and who is constantly downing copious amounts of mead.
Image
Aln with his companions, Orion the Marksman, a great hunter, and a Valkyrie.
Image
The three viking chieftains.
Image
The entire viking horde, in all it's pagan glory.

This is amazingly good! In fact it's inspired me: I'm now sat here sky clad (nude) in woad dye, gnashing my teeth on the bronze of my Pictish Shield and quaffing mead while Ingrid (captive wench) braids my pubic hair as my Viking mates and I throw battleaxes at the neighbouring villages brainballs (heads) for a laugh. I'm in Valhalla!... Oh, wait it was all an exagerated day dream. *sigh*

Wonderful! these guys are awesome, Love the way you tied the different colors in, I would suggest a head Viking though, with a different color like purple to be the leader of all of them. Also, the little dio you set up is quite good, I especially like the barrels of beer set into the wall of the hall... very nice. Now I'm looking forward to more of your armies!

EDIT: I am now in the top 50 posters. Yes!

The fort is amazing, especially the mead hall. May there be much feasting and drinking! And good job modifying the longboat, too.

Don't worry too much about Viking's honour, they used to hit and run and slaughter defenceless monks anyways. Not saying they weren't great warriors though.

Exaggeration is right! That's not woad at all!

I heard a good story about Viking honor once. So a Viking gets in a battle with something, probably like a couple of trolls or an ice giant because it was tough enough to leave him all wounded but not enough to kill him. So some kindly monks find this Viking all wounded and unconscious and take him back to the church monastery to patch him up.

He wakes up in the middle of the night and finds himself surrounded by sleeping monks and whatever loot you usually find in monasteries, crucifixes and grails or whatever. So he drags himself out of bed, goes outside, raises some huge clamor to wake everybody up. Once he's made sure everyone's awake, he goes ahead and raids the place and kills all the monks and burns down the church etc. It was a matter of honor; Vikings can't leave a raid unraided, but looting the church while everyone's sleeping is for burglars, not Vikings.

This is a great army. I like how it has character. With some fun mix of characters and units I am sure it would be great to play this army.

Well done. :D

Wow, - what a seriously amazing Viking village and fort. I love the longboats, - we don't see enough watercraft here on the forum IMHO.

And of course the Vikings themselves are great pieces of work. What other armies do you have btw?

My other medieval armies are Lions, Crowns, Dragons, Romans and Arabs as well as some random mercenaries and other assorted badguys. I've also got pirates with a ship, some imperials with a fort, a squad of modern mercenaries, a squad of special forces guys and several smaller futuristic armies, although the majority of my armies are medieval. My younger brother has a lot more futuristic stuff than I do. Overall, I think I've got at least 300 figures.
