Britannian Patrol Fleet

Post by Theblackdog » Thu Jun 09, 2011 4:25 pm

Image
A Britannian Navy gunboat escorts a trader on the borders of Her Majesty's space.

Image
It's currently 5:00 New Greenwich Mean Time, which means that it's teatime aboard all ships of the Britannian fleet...

Image
... Which explains why they're caught with their pants down when the Devil's Claw, Captain Cutlass' personal ship, drops out of warp and destroys the Britannian gunboat with one volley from its dual rail guns.

Image
"Oh, bugger."

Image
The tables turn for the pirates, however, when the freighter reveals itself to be a deadly Q-Ship, deploying its concealed missile and torpedo tubes and swinging them to face the pirate vessel.

Image
As the first missile hits, Captain Cutlass realizes his mistake. The railguns won't be able to recharge before the Q-ship's heavy torpedoes strike home, so Cutlass has no choice but to turn tail and flee the battle at full thrust. Two Hurricane fighters and a York bomber launch from the Q-ship in pursuit, with a boarding pod full of Royal Marines just behind them.

Image
The Claw wins, just barely, and manages to warp out as the torpedo detonates harmlessly behind it. "Huzzah! God save the Queen!"
"Wait, why are we so stereotypically British?"
"Because our dialogue's being written by an American, you wanker."
"Oh. Bugger."

Image
The Hurricanes and York are mainly patrol craft, too old and clunky to serve on the front lines. I don't really like them, I was short on both parts and patience when I made the things.

Image
The two frigates are intended to fall somewhere between White Nun's White Sector steamships and Warhead's ironclad Space Dreadnoughts. They have the same coloration and shape as Warhead's ships, but retain the smokestacks from White Nun's designs. The Britannian gunboat is an ubiquitous sight across the Empire, armed with one heavy and one light laser cannon as well as numerous point-defense batteries too small to show here.

Image
This shot didn't come out too well, but it shows the secondary drive below the main engine, which I really like for some reason.

Image
The freighter/Q-ship with weapons retracted.

Image
Missile and torpedo tube extended. In addition to serving as decoy freighters to lure in and attack pirates, Q-ships also act as long-ranged support craft in minor battles. Based on civilian designs, they don't have the same performance as real warships, but they can store large numbers of fighters, boarding pods, missiles, and torpedoes in their converted holds.

Image
The Devil's Claw is a rehash of an old ship I built last winter. It has actual weapons now, so I don't have to bullshit about "experimental micro-missiles" in order to justify its existence. Also, it can now sit level to the ground when on a stand.

Image
Rumor has it that Cutlass built the ship by stealing two Immortal Empire railgun frigates from a shipyard, then stripping them down and grafting them to either side of his specially-built luxury living quarters pod.

One noob-ish question: where do the Britannians stand in the Immortal War? I looked on the wiki but they weren't listed on the factions page for the War.

:ftw: Perfect! Exactly what I had suggested to WN.
Communiqué to Captain Blackdog from Grand Admiral Cromwell of the Black; Her Majesties Royal Brittanian Navy wrote:In these pressing times we find that the Empire is short an Admiral of the Blue. Therefore, for extreme awesome above and beyond the call of duty I hereby award you Admiralty of Blue Sector. For the Queen!
This thread is now linked to the Wiki page.

POLITICS: Britannia has recently joined the Immortal Alliance due to extreme pressures and unfortunate events from other Empires. Mainly continued Scythian aggression and the break down of diplomatic relations with Assyria after the distasteful incident which saw two Britannian Ironclad's torn apart by the Venus.

That doesn't mean that your own personal feelings towards the Immortals should be ignored. Once you control Blue Sector it's yours, and you alone will decide what to do for the best of the Empire. So, just like I said to WN, you make the calls. However, insurrection or mutiny from the Britannian Core would have consequences, but it could happen.

@Silva: That also refers to you too as you are in charge of Yellow Sector and so faced with the same decision as WN and Blackdog... maybe I should have said before, sorry. :)

Holy shit... I didn't quite expect that.

Blue Sector will continue to build up its naval forces immediately, sir. We estimate that we shall be able to double the strength of our gunboat fleet within 2 days.

Eep! This places my Prussians in jeopardy, the Brittanians were supposed to become their allies against the Inquistadores in my campaign, now they're on their own (against VoL, Inquistadores, Brittanians, Immortals and natives, no less ) Brittanians are not gonna mix well with my Inquistadores either way though, I wonder how that'll work out.

Well done sir! That'll teach those dash blasted pirates to go poking their noses in. Bounders have no manners attacking at tea time; - should be taken out and shot.
Congratulations on your appointment Admiral Blackdog. Just the man for the Blue Sector, you've got some fine ships under your command.

If you would all turn to page 4001 of your "Welcome to the Immortal Alliance" pamphlet you will read edict 40:1:02a, and 40:1:02b...
Welcome to the Immortal Alliance wrote:40:1:02a - The Immortals are sensitive to internecine wars between allied nations and will deal with all such situations with a refined over the centuries no-nonsense approach...
I think it was the Emperor himself that said it best in the first such instance...
The Immortal Emperor in 1,980 wrote: ...We know where you live...
The edict goes on to say...
Those Nations found instigating old grudges in such a fashion as to harm Immortal interests and are identified as the guilty party then the lives of the ruling cast of that nation are forfeit as are their military High Command. If there should be any resistance it will be met with extreme prejudice at the hands of ALL the allied nations and the Capital planet will be raised. If one side can not be identified as the guilty nation then both suffer the same fate.

40:1:02b - IF however the nations involved fail to desist and hostilities continue then the people of that nation will suffer the same fate as their leaders as in 40:1:02a. As it is considered that if the rulers were weak and so executed but the situation persists then the problem must be the people and the weakness inherent to that race and therefore extermination is the only recourse.
Obviously the Immortals take this sort of shenanigans very seriously.

Oh boy :s Now both my space factions are doomed. On a more positive sidenote this at least means I'll have more than enough enemies for my Prussians.

Only if they attack each other while they remain allied to the Immortals. You could always, you know... not attack each other and stuff.

Well Ii do have my Austrians which I'll be doing some more work on once I've caught up with finishing my White Sector Britannians.
And there is my Chinese Warlord army from the Empire of the Sun. In the late 19th and early 20th Century the Chinese did a lot of arms deals with Germany.

So possibly with the Britannians throwing their lot in with the Immortals the other nations with colonies in the same galaxy are very likely to declare war on the Britannian League.

A Britannian fast courier ship from the Blue Sector enters orbit around New London.

Communique From: Grand admiral Blackdog of the Blue to High Lord Grand Admiral Cromwell:

Image

After reviewing the engagement between our anti-pirate patrol ships and the pirate vessel Devil's Claw, we have come to the conclusion that, had a second gunboat been present at the scene, it would have been able to block the Claw's escape route and, acting in concert with the Q-Ship, destroy the Claw before its railguns could recharge. As such, I have ordered our shipyards to increase gunboat production. I am proud to report that we have fully doubled the number of gunboats in service in the Blue Sector. In addition, all gunboats in the Blue Sector have been fitted with a new sensor package that can detect nearby warp signatures.

Image
From now on, all anti-pirate patrols will include two gunboats. We anticipate this will lead to a much higher rate of pirate captures and kills in the Blue Sector.
Courier Ship Crew wrote: CLASSIFIED DATA -- FOR ADMIRALTY EYES ONLY

By the way, Lord Admiral, during our journey here we encountered an unknown vessel. Despite its greater size it was easily able to match the acceleration of our courier.

Image
When the ship caught up with us, however, it only disabled our vessel with an electromagnetic pulse and then fled before we could bring our systems back online. We therefore believe it to be a reconnaissance craft without much offensive capability. Data and analysis are being forwarded to the Admiralty computer cores now.
