Well, did you see all the shots of Gandalf in the trailer? I get the feeling that we'll be seeing a bit more of "his side of the story" - there's a bloody lot of stuff he did that he just mentions offhand in The Hobbit, going to find Thorin's father- I think- for instance, and his whole adventure over that bit.

But it's gonna be awesome because Guillermo Del Toro wrote the screenplays (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth, The Devil Backbone, Splice).

I like The Hobbit way more than Lord of the Rings. LotR just seemed like a longer, more drawn out, Hobbit story. Not saying it's bad or anything... but if I had to rank them I would easily put The Hobbit ahead of LotR.

That would be pretty interesting to see some of the side quests Gandalf went on. There was also the necromancer he mentions. These are also parts where they can add their own to the story with out taking away from the original.

Unlike what they did with LotR... for example when they added the damn breaking during the battle at Isengard. I was like "uh.... wtf? That didn't happen in the book and why was there any need to do this?"

They didn't flood Isengard in the books? I thought they did, but I'm too far away from any copies to check. I liked some of the other big changes just because they had the hobbits stare straight into the camera and say "we're not even supposed to be here" with a giant wink. Maybe minus the giant wink part.

I strongly expect that they'll be taken from the other side stories from the original writings. There was plenty of other stuff going on at the same time; Saruman's role will probably be to advise Gandalf not to bother worrying about the Necromancer: "don't worry guy! look over here!"

Yeah. The Dark Lord was just chilling there. I suspect we'll see a /little/ bit of that.

I think that was the Simarillion cuz when Gandolf left the dwarves and hobbit during The Hobbit he was gone. You didn't hear anything about him until he showed up again, gave a little explanation about what he was up to, and on with the The Hobbit story.

I'm hoping to see that as well. I always wanted to know what Sauron the Necromancer looked like, as well as how he went through life and stuff in his spirit-like form there.

The hobbits better have hairy feet like the ones in the book, that was my favourite bit about them, else i'm not buying those sets (atleast not for the figures).

I expect that most of the reason to split it into two movies was money (because who would pay for half of a movie?) That said, I also believe that they're going to put quite a bit more Gandalf ass-kicking into this (also- Gandalf/Galadriel wtf?) which I am definitely looking forward to. Hopefully this doesn't end up like Deathly Hallows part II, and just be a completely different story under the same title.
