Speaking as an older gray-bearded person -- Quantum Surfer Vami has all the features and symbols in place to be the perfect archetype of the narcissist phase that hits in the transition from adolescent narcissism to young adult narcissism. The bottle, the mask, the hill, the funhouse-mirror "Truth" he needs to sustain his powers of bullshit, all perfect, even if they're a little on-the-nose and hamfisted. He may be an even better masked Salieri than Overwatch.

Without receiving empathy or the ability to look up to others, children do not develop empathy for themselves or others. They may grow up being psychologically stuck in the narcissistic phase.
As a result, they feel flawed and unacceptable. They fear rejection and isolation because of their perceived worthlessness. To avoid this pain, they focus on controlling how others view them by embellishing their accomplishments and skills.
They feel deep shame, which causes them to develop an artificial self. While we all develop an artificial self to some degree, narcissists IDENTIFY with their artificial self. Preoccupied with presenting the right image, they are ironically rarely aware of their own low self-esteem.
People with adequate self-esteem are usually willing to look at themselves with honest self-reflection and consider areas in which they could improve. This makes sense because they have empathy for the flaws and inadequacies in both themselves and others.
Sadly, the narcissist believes that flaws are to be hated and concealed, and that only perfection and superiority can be displayed. Thus, they view themselves and others with a perspective that swings from over-valuation to loathing. In their quest for approval and acceptance, they use their charm and charisma. Once dependent on others’ approval, the smallest hint of disapproval can send them into a state of punishing vengeance.

Post-script 6: I know Star Trek: TNG is from before a lot of you were born, but what do you guys think of a QS Continuum?
Post-script 7: How do Quantum Surfers interact with the main Kanon, or is there even an answer to that question? Possible answers include:
- 6. As the avatars of Humans, they are effective Gods (or at least the demiurges) of the BrikVerse, and somehow really are extremely important to it, despite rarely figuring into the Kanon in any prominent way (my least favorite choice, honestly)
7. Like WH40K's creatures of the Warp, they are manifestations of the psychik energies of minifigs across the BrikVerse, and only believe in their own goddishness and/or importance when the minifigs' beliefs drive them to (I prefer this one)
8. They are the result of some kind of wizard drug trip (most likely choice)
9. The Beige Carpet is an alternate dimension just like the Negaverse, the Quantum Surfers are BrikWars' version of the Seelie Court, and these are just its standard inhabitants who got delusions of grandeur as soon as BrikVerse wizards learned how to tap into their dimension for mystikal energy. I also like this one because it invites the existence of Beige Carpet Unseelies for the QSes to battle with, and that's why they're usually too preoccupied to interfere in BrikWars Kanon.

Why not both? The Quantumsurfers are the result of a chaos wizard drug trip?7. I'm imagining that some greater power has created the QS'. The Great Builder, perhaps.
But that's identical to stubby's theory 6.

Re: 2 Bottles 2 Sorrows
Regardless of what people like, the beige carpet can still figure into it.
Parts of a Carpet
Warp
It is the main backbone of a carpet and it consists of yarn strands that stretch from top to bottom (height-wise, vertically). These strands are stretched on the loom before weaving begins. Once the rug is completed and cut from the loom, the ends of the warp make up the fringe. The warp is normally made of wool, cotton or silk.
Pile
It is referred to as the collection of knots of yarn that are twisted between the warp strands. The knots are weaved in either the Turkish (Traditional, Ghiordes, Symmetrical) knot, or the Persian (Commercial, Senneh, Asymmetrical) knot. The Turkish knot is a double knot formed by looping the pile yarn across two warp strands and then drawing each end back through the inside of both warps. The Persian knot is a single knot formed by looping the pile yarn through two warp strands and then drawing it back through one. The Turkish knot is more difficult to tie and more durable than the Persian knot.
Weft
These are yarn strands that are inserted perpendicular (width-wise, horizontally) to the warp strands, and woven in and out of the warp strands during weaving. It is normally made up of the same material as the warp, but is only visible from the back of the rug. The number of weft strands that pass between the rows of knots are referred to as shoots, and sometimes the weft strands are dyed.

Re: 2 Bottles 2 Sorrows
I've been comparing QS with Q this entire time. I thought that was part of the joke. Only the really neurotic ones get names and their powers become constrained by their chosen identities. It's a laugh riot. As for the rest of them, I've been considering them as the ultimate voyeurs, blinking across space, time, and all the broken parts of both, watching the universe like a movie. I had imagined their attitudes toward the named QSs to range from uninterested and possibly annoyed (Hey you! Down in front!) to deeply invested (with the QS drama becoming more interesting to them than, say, hanging out in the hearts of stars and whatnot).
As for their origins, I like the answer: why not both? As far as the BW Kanon is concerned, you can slam as many contradictory concepts together and still somehow make it make sense. Or flip a giant middle finger to those who refuse to acknowledge the obvious. Maybe their power derives specifically from the fact that they are an amalgamation of all of these origin stories simultaneously? A convergence of Kanons from different Rekons, both existing and forgotten.

Re: 2 Bottles 2 Sorrows
The Quantum Surfers are surfers of the Quantum, also known as the Space Between the Baseplates. Their powers are vast and mostly chaotic, but most Quantum Surfers lack any sort of plan or vision for the future and mostly just sit around bickering and fighting with each other. Like all minifigs, they desire power and recognition and they attempt to obtain this through complicated alliances and backstabs that usually leave no Quantum Surfer better off than they were before. Caring little for the events of the Brikverse, each Surfer hopes to obtain total domination of their plane of existence, which they believe would allow them to easily conquer the Brikverse as well. This belief is solely based upon the assumption that any minifig that resides on a baseplate cannot ever match the power of a Quantum Surfer. This assumption has yet to be verified.

Re: 2 Bottles 2 Sorrows
I like this for the named surfers. Like, Ennui drove them to become conquerors. Sat around for an eternity watching people take showers, they grew bored. They decided to give themselves names and identities, based on certain mythological Humans they'd heard about, and actually fucking do something for once. Their intrigues grew unchecked because the most of the other surfers couldn't be bothered to check them and most of the other super powerful BrikVersian beings were too busy doing much cooler stuff to notice.

Re: 2 Bottles 2 Sorrows
This, and Quantum's answer are the closest to what I originally planned, but Brikwars is a community driven kanon, so it doesn't really make sense for me to be in charge of all the gods.Zupponn wrote:The Quantum Surfers are surfers of the Quantum, also known as the Space Between the Baseplates. My idea for QSs, was that several of them formed together into a community that guides and protects the kanon of the Brikverse, called the Brikwars Czat (which is also a pocket universe where the Quantum Surfers discuss the Brikverse). Each Quantum Surfer has his or her own ideas for what story things should happen, and most of them conflict, so they settle them by playing evenly (or close to evenly) matched games set between two chosen armies. Colette and Silverdream are the two QuantumSurfers who reluctantly rule the Brikwars Czat together. Colette is the current master of the Brikwars Czat, and controls all aspects of the pocket universe.
I deliberately left out some information so I don't spoil what I have planned, as this is all going to be explored in Overwatch 3: No Glove No Love.
This sig is too fucking large: show anyway
