Fleet building?

Post by piltogg » Fri Feb 20, 2015 10:57 am

Hey all,

So I have decided it's finally time to join the ranks of people who built some spaceships in the LDD, and downloaded the program.

Not entirely sure how to use it though. Are there any good tutorials out there that you know of?

Also; what is the process we have been using to save a creation as an lxf and download it to the wiki so that other people can also use it?

Please; assume that I am a noob, and do not understand what you are talking about.

I think everyone can attach files to posts here in the forum now. So just save as the file like you would any other and then hit upload attachment on the forum post here (right below submit to the left).

I don't know of any tutorials. There are some hints and tips here but they're super basic. We never really got round to doing much with the thread. My advice is just to play around with it and don't forget grouping. I can explain grouping a little later. Or someone else can. If you don't learn it first.

I recommend either one of the following:

NOOB GUIDE TO LDD'ING
Vami-esque route
Download some of the ships I have available here and pick apart said vessels to discover certain tricks and briks that may prove vital to your shipbuilding. I have learned some painful lessons using this route, but I have learned to create my own flavors and styles.

Normal LDD'er Route
Throw briks together for years until you have developed winning formulas and your own flavor. Much more time consuming, but it will work out for you in the long run.

UPLOADING PROGRAM
As the Ye Olde Wiki is dead, I suggest you use the "Upload attachment" when typing up a post or using Dropbox. Easiest ways to find the .LXFs (Your LDD saves) are to make a thread and stick an attachment on there or stick on my handy-dandy wiki in the link provided here.

Yes, exactly like that.

Now, I'm going to throw you a bone here and give you a tool that dramatically cuts down the list of multi-colored briks you have to scroll through to find the brik you need: LDD Extended.

You can start a new file in LDD Extended and then import the model, but there is a shorter, more storage friendly way:

On your tool bar, go to "View," and then hover over "New Theme." Select "LDD Extended" and you're set.

Yeah I've definitely noticed that my computer does not handle ldd very well. It has to spend a minute loading basically every time I open one of the part menus. So.. this would help with that?

Every time I load up LDD I just get annoyed by how everything is set up. It sometimes takes me forever to find the specific part I'm looking for and then it sometimes doesn't want me to place pieces where I want to place them. Then by the time I get part of the way in, I've lost interest in what I was doing and go do something else.

Yeah, like, I'm not sure why LDD wants to put parts on bottom of other parts, particularly plates, instead of on top where the camera is. Once you get used to it, though, you start to build in automatic workarounds. Building SNOT tends to help.

The loading times, though. I aint got nothin for that.
