I always played that you just knock the unit with the lowest armor off first, and subtract their armor from the total damage:

Example: An officer with an armor of 5 and 3 troops with an armor of 4 are in a squad. They take 11 damage. One trooper(4 armor) is killed, leaving 7 damage. another trooper is killed, leaving 3 damage remaining, which does nothing.

Defending player decides which specific units are removed when there are multiple units with equal armor.

That sounds like a very simple and fats way to do it but wouldn't it make squads a dumb idea as way more units will get killed then if you just spread them out.

Lets say three guys wielding pistols fire at your squad. On the damage roll one rolls a 4, the other rolls a 3 and the last one rolls a 2 for a total of 9 damage. That would mean that two units would die in the squad. If they where not in squad formation the pistol wielders could never kill more then one guy with the same rolls as they would have to choose how to spread out their attacks over the available targets.

This makes being in a squad sounds like a really bad idea.

Unless those pistol guys are in a squad of their own I think each bit of damage is taken separately, so no one dies.

Squads are useful for combining damage, size, and player convenience.

Yeah, you're not dividing damage, you're dividing attacks. So if you do 4, 3, and 2 damage then one guy takes 4, one guy takes 3, and one guy takes 2.

If there are three guys in the squad, that means nobody dies. If there are two guys in the squad, then the first guy takes 4, the second guy takes 3, and then you start over with the first guy again for the 2, so 4+2=6 he dies.

Is this for attacks from another squad, or from multiple, separate people?

It's for any time you're taking multiple combined attacks, whatever the source or sources. For instance:

6. a bunch of attacks from an enemy squad
7. a warship firing a bunch of weapons at you at once
8. a bunch of enemy units coordinating to make a Combined Fire attack
9. an enemy squad, a warship, and a bunch of enemy units all combining forces to make a combined fire attack together because they just hate your squad that much

If you're just taking multiple non-combined-fire attacks then you handle each one completely separately like you would normally.

Alight, thanks.
I just throw combined fire into a damage pool and knock figs off for simplicity's sake.

That makes sense. So do you need to keep track of the +1's that come with long ranged weapons for each die right? And the 2d6's of a two handed weapon stay together also right?

What about combining things like auto fire or explosives into a combined damage attack?
What about when an officers orders a squad to fire at a an enemy unit and thus boost their skill to 1d8. Does the unit with the automatic weapon in the squad still get the skill boost if he fires at the target with automatic spread fire?

Just throwing out some random questions that where never really clear to me.

There's no division by dice or +1s. It's divided by attacks. If I have one attack that does 1d6 damage, one that does 3d10+5, and one that does 2d4 Fire, then the first guy takes the first attack, the second guy takes the second attack, and the third guy takes the third attack, in order of which damage rolls are the highest.
*CRAZYHORSE* wrote:What about combining things like auto fire or explosives into a combined damage attack?
Those are handled by physical location still, so once the location is set, you don't get to pick which squad members get hit. Damage is still cumulative though.

Yep, although whether he uses automatic spread fire depends on the order of the officer and whether or not the weapon can switch back and forth between regular and auto fire. Even if you're just blasting away with a shotgun or flamethrower, there's still some skill involved.

Alright thanks, so if I understand correctly if an officer commands his squad squad to fire at a single target all the units with ranged weapons, automatic weapons and blast weapons get a skill boost although both the automatic fire and blast fire are handled on location.

Weapons like shotguns and flamethrowers automatically have arc fire centered on the target pointed out by the officer. A weapon like a machine gun, which can be used for either regular fire or automatic fire, would just be used for regular fire.

Mike, I gotta say, I love the tweaks you continue to make to the rulebook. The addition of new images and examples continues to keep it fresh and exciting. I particularly liked the bit of (HTML 5?) wizardry that you did on the MOC Chapter for the d20 - that was slick and unsettling like a little Brikthulhu jumpscare. Bravo good sir, bravo. :tiger:

I'm so glad that finally worked on somebody. So often I add stuff that I know 99% of people will roll their eyes at, and I have to sit and patiently wait for the one guy who digs it.
