Achtung forum!

Post by ikensall » Sun Jan 03, 2016 12:39 pm

The Donald Trump situation has interested me recently, despite the general consensus in my country being more left wing and less willing to listen to him, I still struggle to compose an argument as to why he is not someone who should be elected. Yeah I know you're just supposed to should "but he talks bullshit", stick your fingers in your ears and yell "blablablablah" but that's never going to change someone's mind if they don't agree with you in the first place (and I loathe people who maintain that they've "won" a debate when they stop responding and pretend you're not talking).

As such, this video made me happy:

And this one made me happy in a different way:

Well besides wanting a registration of Muslims (that's bad) his fiscal plan will continue the Rich-get-Richer process, and we know that trickle-down economics doesn't work.

On the other hand, he's the most entertaining candidate I've seen on a national stage, especially when he and Jeb argue, so i hope they both stick around for a bit.

As a US citizen, I struggle to see why he should be. Yes, his sensationalism is "pulling down the curtain" of politics, but it's because he is so bad it should be sateerical. In a government that seems to be diminishing in integrity and altruistic intentions, trump would not be a savior, he'd be the nail in the coffin.

I appreciate how he has changed much of the political landscape, and hope it opens the door for more people who are not "politiciabs" to engage and run, but he would be a poor choice. It honestly scares me that people are latching onto his fear mongering bringing what I once thought was a joke into more and more of a reality.

In retrospect I think I should alter this to "I can't explain why his speeches lack any real substance or specific purpose (ignoring his erroneous foreign policy/ beliefs in general), and yet why so many people bite his carrot."

Aside from being sound and intelligent Trump-bashing, that video clicks with me for successfully breaking down the wall of stupid hair, pseudo-racist generalisations about Mexicans and people getting somewhat rustled in response.

These expressions man... "bite his carrot," for example -- what does that even mean? I am having trouble understanding whether your opinion of Trump is positive, negative, or neutral.

No I don't support Trump, but I find the fact that other people do quite interesting. I mean, how are we going to tell the donkey that the carrot is a lie?

I don't think that the people who like Trump are being tricked. Well, maybe they are in a small way, specifically in that they're mostly lower middle class and they used to be doing better, but billionaires like him rigged everything and screwed the system so much that it made the rest of America poor. So economically I believe they've been tricked.

But the other stuff -- build a wall, ban muslims, etc -- they want that stuff because they're white and they're racist and they're mad. They aren't being tricked by Trump, they hate blacks and they hate the other. Some of them think 9/11 was done by Muslims and covered up by Jews and now there's A FUCKING N****R in the White House, he must have some how lied to get there. And the fucking queers now have fag marriage. What happened to my America? They want to take their country back and to make America great (white) again.

I am dramatizing, but the anger these Trump supporters feel is very real. That's why they go to his rallies, and that's why every time he says something indefensible they lap it up like cats around a bowl of milk. He's talking to them. He understands how angry they are and he says exactly what they want to hear.

Not being an American I am somewhat detached, but I think a good way to calm the hater-hicks down (can I call the hater-hicks, or are they just desperate people who have been misled by colonial legacies and their isolation in the middle of the oceans, where one of their two neighbours is very cushy and the other one is 'dem pesky drug dealing snugglebunnies!) would be to prove that when Trump says exactly what they want to hear, he is in fact saying nothing much at all, as the video makes clear. This wouldn't solve the issue of anyone who thinks building a wall along the Mexican border is a great idea in and of itself regardless Trump's marketing. But I think if people realised all the emotions he stirred in them were done so by manipulating their own vulnerable nostalgic/tribal longings, it wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.

I think no matter which way you cut it, or how irrefutable your conclusions are, there will always be people who want to go round to the neighbouring tribe and subjugate/kill them, because natural selection isn't morally correct. In the mean time it satisfies me to think that it's scientifically valid to say that Trump's speeches have virtually no worthy content in them.

I somehow doubt these people have enough presence of mind or self-reflection to be able to think something like that. That might sound very dismissive of me, but it actually comes from a place of concern. I fear that we are so successfully overstimulated by the mountain of media our culture produces every day and by our own day to day struggles that many of us don't think about things. All decisions that we don't make are made for us, and the culture has already imagined solutions to most of the questions or problems that the average person would be able to produce. Why think of how to deal with a difficult situation when you already watched a possible answer on the Hallmark channel 7 years ago? Also keep in mind our poor education system which does not encourage critical thought.

The hope of democracy is that there exists an overpowering number of more thoughtful people who will dissuade the hawks from carrying out their violent plans.
