It's the only one I've played so I'm not sure where you are going with that.

Anyway I was in the area of a Lego store recently so now I have over a hundred more travesty bricks

I started on Red Box D&D and have played every edition since, and I've got to say 5e has definitely impressed me the most overall. 4e was the cursed one as far as I'm concerned, thank god we're past it.

Same here on the Red Box. Played 1st, & 2nd, but I'm still gaming 3.5/Pathfinder. Never liked 4th, so never got around to leaving 3.5. Is 5th that much better?

The one thing that 3.5e players and 5e players can agree on is that 4e is Shite.
To me, 5e seems like they made the player characters more able to do what they wanted and dumbed it down a little from 3.5, I just like the feeling of 3.5 more than 5e. despite my griping, I do still play 5e occasionally.

3.5 and Pathfinder are my favorites. I recently read through 5e and it seems like it would be fun, more casual.

3.5e is my favorite if I'm playing with a bunch of players who also have 3.5e as their favorite. But they're pretty rare, and for people who don't like that style, 3.5 is pretty rough to struggle through.

5e is my favorite for being able to play with everybody. It's the kind of thing where I know everyone is going to find plenty of stuff to enjoy regardless of what kind of gamer or non-gamer they are.

My only gripe with 5e is the slow release schedule. Which is arguably the opposite problem to what some older systems had. But Xanathar's is coming soon, and will move all of the UA into official rules, which along with Volo's gives us the expansions needed to the PHB and MM.

Although Volo's is eclipsed by the third party Tome of Beasts. Reading through a PDF of it made me want to start a campaign just to play with those monsters.

I did a silly campaign in 5e and it was fantastic.

Book Haul by Bryan Rombough, on Flickr

From the 'Buck-a-Book Sale' at All Saints' Anglican Church, Westboro. The pickings were a little slim this time, but I've only read one of the books I bought at previous sales...

So it's literally been months since I bought this book and I've still only skimmed it. But people have asked about it, and I likely won't be reading further without actually playing, so here's my first impressions:

The system is fairly crunchy but doesn't look overly complex. Characters are defined primarily by attributes and skills which modify dice rolls. Combat is a big chapter in the book and looks fairly tactical with mini's on a square grid as the default mode. There are equipment lists and spacecraft & related activities also have chapters devoted to them.

The setting calls itself "post-post-apocalyptic", but I felt more of a "space fantasy" vibe myself. I won't summarise the setting, but there are strong themes of eugenics and colonialism in the story, with talk about humanity dying out due to "genetic erosion" and the PC's by default being the inheritors of a depopulated universe full of ancient ruins and treasures. I can't tell without further reading if the authors are trying to deconstruct these themes, or if they're just repeating themes common to a lot of sci-fi & fantasy without thinking about it. I suspect that whatever the author's intentions, most players will simply take the colonialist power fantasy elements at face value.

That being said, I'd still give the game a try.
