...which doesn't stop them from referring to themselves as Planetary Defense Prisoners. As refugees from Galactic conflict, many of them can be kind of bitter about the various other nations in the Galaxy. Doesn't stop them from trying to promote the planet as a tourist trap.

Officers are almost ALWAYS normal Legonians. Some of them may have been pirates in a former life, not that they'd admit it. Other possible species found in the PDP include, but are NOT limited to (from left to right on all pics):

Kobolds: Short little lizard people with long snouts. They are skilled merchants, decent scouts, and good at swamp and tunnel fighting.
Grommams: Ape-creatures from a jungle world. Strong and fairly intelligent, they are skilled machinists and smiths and often found in various mechanical professions.
Ursals: Bear-kin. Very dangerous when angered, they weren't defeated so much as they opted to move from their icy homeworld (by the ZMC - their icy world was very rich in trans metals) to the Menagerie's more Mediterranean climate for a 'permanent' vacation. Basically, they sold their homeworld to the ZMC to move somewhere nicer.

Leoni: Catfolk. Come in several different types. After a long and quite bloody war against the Imperium, they were defeated about five hundred years ago. The survivors were the first beings 'deported' to the Menagerie. They have long since come to consider the world to be their home and would do anything to defend it. Agile and fast, they are decent ranged operatives.
Kenku or Tengu: Wingless crow-folk. Better merchants than warriors, the Kenku excel at stealth work. Once trained as assassins by a rival Galactic civilization, they were deported en masse when the Imperium destroyed their employers about four hundred and twenty years ago. These days, they act as merchants and traders, going from alien group to alien group, buying and selling goods. Some of the more murder- or stealth-oriented among their numbers joined the PDP to act as scouts or (in one extreme case) in the Quartermaster's Offices.
Knollosi: Gnolls. Strange hyena-like creatures. Their own civilization actually fell before the Imperium rose. Scattered groups of them pop up on worlds across the Galactic sector, usually keeping to the fringes of civilized areas. Excellent scouts and pathfinders, especially through desert or scrub terrain. Tall and strong, they often join the PDP as Heavies or specialized Ranger corps (seek-and-destroy units).

Goblinoids. From left to right, Goblin, Great Goblin, and Orc. The goblinoids and their allies warred against the Imperium for almost two centuries, and small groups were captured and exiled to the Menagerie over the years. All are skilled fighters, but without the influence of their priesthood, most were content to settle down on the Menagerie and get on with their lives. They became weaponsmiths, mechanics, and sometimes merchants.

Aarakocra: Eagle-people. Unlike the Kenku (who tend to dislike the Aaracokra), the eagle-folk still have their wings and can fly. Excel as aerial scouts and snipers, due to their excellent long-range vision. Not as hardy as other races, they are best suited for hit-and-run tactics.
Scerrow: Red orcs. Once, these were the elite of the elite among the goblinoid races. That was a long time ago. The Scerrow are still badass fighters, but there aren't a lot of them left. They tend to work very close with the PDP. Those who don't are usually weaponmakers or laborers. Often get training as heavy weapon specialists.
Peaches: A LOT of peaches have been forcibly exiled to the Menagerie in recent years. Some come voluntarily, knowing that other nations cannot (for now, anyway) violate the Menagerie's neutral status due to the GIGANTIC NEGABLOCK GATE on the main continent, which requires the support of ALL nations to try closing...

Equipment varies from individual to individual. The Menagerie has a lot of trans-blue equipment for some reason, and the PDP makes heavy use of such things. Melee specialists favor more savage looking swords, while the Aarakocra carry spears or special javelins. As you can see, this Aarakocra female is trained as a sniper as well.

Knollosi, Ursals, Great Goblins, Scerrow, and Orcs will often train as Heavy Support. Weapons will range from HMG's to rocket launchers, flamethrowers, and the gigantic "siegebreaker" hammer shown here.

Kobolds and Goblins favor pistols over rifles, but again, some do take sniper training or go for compact miniguns. The average Great Goblin will often carry a Veltsk-class Pole-gun, an odd blend between a halberd and shotgun.
This is by no means a complete list of species found on the planet or in the PDP. Other beings include Centaurs, Lizardfolk (taller than the kobolds), Draconidae (weird dragon-people), stonelike Goyles, and several beings that used to be thought of as daemons, but were actually just rare alien races (Succubi, Kitsune, and so forth).
