The Isle of Mist

On an isle off the coast of Westeron...

A huge hoard is hidden inside a cave. This hoard belongs to the Draklon Raiders' number one leader, The Prime Matriach.

The hoard is the Matriach's source of power: the Raiders will only follow a leader wealthy enough to compensate them for their loyalty. Only the most loyal are brought to the isle to guard it, arriving and leaving blindfolded.

Still there are those greedy or foolish enough to try and steal from her, and they pay the price, with no exception. If even a single piece of her hoard goes missing, the Matriarch always takes notice.

A signal pyre chiefly made out of stacked hay stands ready to recall the Raiders scouting the isle to the cave should it be required.

A swamp is near the cave. Given the small number of guards currently present, it's not unlikely some are out on the swamp in a boat.

All of a sudden mist appears out of thin air. This is no uncommon occurrence on this island, so the guards are not alarmed.

From the nearby trees, a group of imperials stalks closer. Lyra Longlance and Tatterdemalion the mage lead a small band onto the isle. The Empire and Draklon Raiders have a tenuous alliance: the Raiders were more than happy to destabilize the kingdom with their raids while The Empire was taking over the Kingdom of Westeron, but now that they own most of it it falls to the Empire to defend their subjects from such raids.

Emperor Cales, having foreseen this problem, ordered this mission. The plan is simple: steal the hoard, control the Raiders.

This mission is of capital importance to the Empire. It will ensure the Draklon Raiders' loyalty and fill their coffers for the war effort, and help gain support among the peasant population by ending the raids. However, if it fails, they will likely see an ally turned into an enemy.

Available factions:

Imperials: Joshua

(Draklon Raiders will act as NPC's)

Objective: get Tatterdemalion to the hoard. Protect him while he opens a portal and move the chests through them.

Stealth: minifigs can attempt to use stealth in this mission so long as they're in cover. Cover works the same way as it does against attacks, and fog provides cover as well. If they enter an enemy minifig's line of sight within 5" the minifig will roll their Action Die against the stealthed minifig's d8 specialty die to see if he discovers it. Higher amounts of cover and moving at half speed provide a positive modifier to the stealthed minifigs. Tatterdemalion, unlike Lyra and the Rangers, rolls a d6 for stealth.

Special actions:

Lyra Longlance - one time in this battle she can call three more rangers which spawn near the cave. Mind that this will alert the guards as there's no fog there. This is a free action.

Tatterdemalion - if he gets near the swamp he can spend an action to call a band of allied water demons. These water demons will then arrive on the next turn. Mind that this will alert the guards.

Yeah. She's a ranger herself and also the leader of the rangers. She's a hero with the stealth specialty, rangers are normal minifigs with the stealth specialty.

Round 1

Imperials

The rangers sneak closer at Half Speed. One is unlucky and gets spotted.

Lyra successfully sneaks closer without being noticed.

Tatters moves up and commits his d10 and d6 to create a Lasting Effect and cover more of the map in mist.

Lyra tries to take out the guard who spotted a ranger, but critically fails. This also alerts the other guard.

Image

This prompts the other rangers to move in at full speed and attack.

Image

They Angry Inch themselves just close enough to strike, knocking one guard down and killing the other.

Draklon Raiders

Image

The guard picks himself up and attacks, but misses. The other guards move closer to check out what's causing the ruckus. The one up front spots the ranger and guard fighting.

Unable to see very far, the gallow guards raise their crossbows and wonder if anything is going to come out of the mist.

Cave guards don't see what's happening and hold position.

The rangers and Lyra surprise the guards and cut them down before they can react.

Near the pyre a ranger cuts down her opponent as well.

Tatterdemalion moves up and shoots, managing to hit, but not doing enough damage (he's slightly out of range still).

Draklon Raiders - NPC

Image

Unaware where they're getting shot from or what's in the mist, the gallow guards take cover behind the wall and fire blindly into the mist. One actually hits Tatters, but doesn't do enough damage.

The cave guards are alerted and turn towards the mist, but hold their position.

The rangers move up, the one in the back sprinting two extra inches.

Lyra shoots her bow and kills a gallows guard. Tatters shoots his pistol but misses.

Lyra moves to the edge of the mist. The Draklon Raiders are still not sure what they are being attacked by.

Draklon Raiders - NPC

The crossbowman backs up towards his axemen allies, who also back up. He fires a shot blindly into the mist, and predictably misses.

Draklon Raiders - NPC

Realizing they're sitting ducks, the axemen retreat into the cave, out of Lyra's line of sight and fire.

A sloop returns from the swamp, bringing with it three raiders. They don't notice anything is wrong yet.

"I can't maintain this spell forever," Tatterdemalion warns. (After two more turns the mist will clear)

They all turn on the approaching reinforcements. Ranged attacks take out the leader. Rangers wait for the raiders to get closer.

Draklon Raiders - NPC

Rather than landing the crossbowmen turn their boat and shoot at the torch near the pyre.

Image

One misses, the other scores a hit that knocks the torch onto the hay. It bursts into flame, meaning that reinforcements will be coming soon!

Even when expected, Water Demons can give you a scare. Lyra meanwhile got really unlucky and incapacitated herself with her arrow. The best laid plans come to naught if the dice aren't with you!

With Lyra down the rangers who were waiting for her don't wait for her signal but instead run out of hiding.

The Empire

The rangers rush the treasure cave. Tatters prepares to shoot.

The other rangers rush towards the cave as well while the water demons rush towards the enemy, naturally.

Draklon raiders

The raiders rush from the cave. *BLAM* Tatters' shot misses.

Two rangers and one raider go down. The remaining ranger is in range to attack!

She makes short work of the raider. Careful though, there were more guards hiding in the cave!

The T-Rex and mage both miss their attacks. One ranger escapes with soiled pants while another gets nommed by dogs.

The waterdemons' crossbows ring out and chip off one SP off the T-Rex (2 remain).

The Empire

The ranger and Tatters make short work of the guards.

Not one to bark orders, Tatters calmly demands the ranger to watch his back and to get Lyra to safety as well. He starts casting his spell, which will transport both the treasure and any survivors out of there. However, it will take some time!

A ranger gets devoured trying to retreat from the T-Rex.

Image

The spear demons charge and slay a dog, the crossbows chip the T-Rex down to his last HP and the Technoviking throws his axe, but it falls short.

Draklon Raiders

Image

The Raiders counterattack. One charioteer leaps off and skewers a demon, the Technoviking gets his head chomped by the T-Rex and in the back the dogs chomp on a crossbow demon. The magetriarch crit fails and drops her staff.

Tatters rolls a combined '12'. Part of the treasure mysteriously disappears. He has to roll 18 more.

The rangers drag Lyra to safety and prepare to defend.

The crossbows deal barely any damage, but the T-Rex's armour roll is even worse. It goes down and throws off its rider, who is disrupted. The spear demon pokes down a dog.

Draklon Raiders

Image

The raiders run closer, avoiding some obstacles, and take down one of the crossbowmen. The other two survive the onslaught.

Not a bad round of attacks for the imperials. They slay one raider and the last attack dog.

Tatters meanwhile keeps vacuuming up treasure, rolling an 8 or a 9.

Draklon Raiders

The Draklonians counterattack, killing a water demon. The magetriarch also finally picks herself up and, lacking her staff, attacks with an axe, but doesn't kill anything.

Round 10

Image

Tatters rolls an 11 or a 12 (I forgot), he's done it! The final pieces of the hoard disappear.

The troops however are too far away to be transported along. They knew it was likely to be a one way mission, and fight on, disposing of another raider.

Endgame

Image

I rolled out the rest of the combat. Another raider is slain, but the remaining imperials are eventually overcome.

They find the hoard gone and the cave empty, however. Their boss isn't going to be happy about this...

Imperial victory! With the hoard taken away, the head matriarch is going to have trouble controlling her forces, and the Draklon Raiders may be dissuaded from raiding imperial lands and be directed towards the Empire's enemies once again. The advantage gained cannot be understated.
