If the stats are completely customizable for each unit, how will you easily remember which unit has what?

You know what, forget it. I'll wait for more info to come out and stop bugging you with questions.

thank you.
like i said, i'll get a battle report up in a week or so.

you have an army sheet where you record the stats for each figure (or group of figures if they're similar). then, you either know which figure is which, or you identify it somehow (i.e., putting a different colored dot on a base for each different figure).

Glory be to the Bomb, and to the Holy Fallout. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be. World without end. May the Blessings of the Bomb Almighty, and the Fellowship of the Holy Fallout, descend upon us all. This day and forever more. Amen!

Hmm, can you draw us some crude diagrams of the battlefield or armies? That would probably spice up the battle report a bit.

If you can't go ahead and post the writeup, just make sure it isn't too hard to follow.

well guys, my friend and I have been unable to post a battle report so far due to there being 5 different sets of rules currently being played around with in R&D. I can, however, point out a few things that will definitely be in the rules. So,

Turn order is interesting
The turn order is arranged such that every single player gets to fire his units every single turn. the turn order goes like:
1. Initiative
2. Player 1 Moves
3. Player 1 Shoots
4. Player 2 Shoots
5. Player 1 CC's
6. Flip players 1 and 2

this causes a lot of shooting to get done in a turn, without having to use overwatch or opportunity fire. This is also one of the reasons it's so deadly, because there is a veritable firestorm every turn until the last few turns.

No time limit on games
unlike 40k, the game is played until the objective is met. no more 6-turn games.
in addition, the basic 200 point game (with about 40 figures a side)... takes 30 minutes to play.

No ranges for weapons!
quite an interesting development here. there are NO ranges for weapons! you can shoot anything you see!

it just gets really hard at long ranges. This is to be realistic with the groundscale (1" to 6')

Easy morale
each squad has a 'panic level' based on how many casualties they've taken. each time the squad takes a morale check, they roll a number of dice based on their number and roll above the panic level. if they fail, they fall back.

Really cheap price!
ten dollars!

more to come....

Well, I like it.

But really, sounds neat and pretty unique so far. Be sure to keep us posted.

Also, you had said before that it could be played with any figures you wanted whether they were official or not. Is this still true?

yup, still true. i hear there are rules for resizing the scale so that you can play with any scale mini's (i.e., inquisitor, epic).

didn't know this was going to be such a hot topic!

the game is called heroes of war and conquest. pretty standard fare, totally generic modern/sci fi skirmish game.

no website, sorry. we only supply a few stores in the RI area, so i can't guarantee that you guys get a rulebook. (i'll see what i can do though...you might have me be PM'ing you an abridged version in a few weeks!).

no release date yet, there's a few kinks to be iron out, or so i hear.

if you guys PM me questions, i will find out the answers and post them for you.

one thing i forgot to mention...
Easy combat!
you roll 2 dice per miniature to shoot, and 1 die to CC. more powerful weapons occasionally use more dice, but the basic miniature uses 2 dice to shoot and 1 to CC.

This sounds like it could be a big hit. It sounds easy, but still similar to plenty of complicated wargames out there that people are really into. If the figures can be of any scale and model, this will be really popular.

The only downfall is that if it is only the rules and that's it, then you're not going to make ANY money off of it. I'm not sure if that's what you're going for at all though, it may not be important to you.

It will be popular, that's for sure, but because you don't have some exclusive product that people need to buy to play the game (save rules, which are just text and can be copied anywhere) there will be nothing to keep people hooked into your system and spending money.

I definitely would buy exclusive figures if you had them, though. I don't know how you could make them only for your system, but it would be nice to have a wargame that literally only took half an hour. Even the simplest games now take more than that (Pirates of the Caribbean, the new Axis and Allies collectible game, etc.).

Nah, it's easy to make money with just rules if you're selling PDF files through RPGnow, lots of people do it. I considered doing it myself, except that then I wouldn't be able to keep making incremental edits to the rulebook every month.

I worry a little about the everybody fires every turn mechanic - seems like that'd work well for a two-player game, but the balance would be thrown off very quickly as you added a third or a fourth player. (i.e., still moving only once a round but increasing the number of times everyone gets to fire between moving.)

That's true. I didn't think about that.

And that's true, too. Maybe have only the next person to have their turn fire or the person after that. Probably the latter would be better, as it would keep everyone more involved in a larger game.

Four player game:
In Player 1's turn, Player 1 shoots, Player 3 shoots, Player 1 CCs.
In Player 2's turn, Player 2 shoots, Player 4 shoots, Player 2 CCs.
In Player 3's turn, Player 3 shoots, Player 1 shoots, Player 3 CCs.
In Player 4's turn, Player 4 shoots, Player 2 shoots, Player 4 CCs.

That way all the players would have something to do every other turn, but still not get too busy with everyone shooting all the time and possibly slowing the game down?

hmm... that's a thought. i'll pass it along to the r&d boys.
on a different note -
if i convince the r&d guys to let me count you lot as playtesters, i could get you advance free copies of the rules. not sure if i can at the moment, though. wait and see.
