How about....a combination of both? Shoot them from a mile away so that they collapse to the ground and slowly wither away, and then you run up to them and hack away.

good old fashioned dark-ages battles are the castle battles for me. Once you get into the gunpowder age, things get annoying. sure you have cannons and whatnot to play with, but you also have.... manners.

and then once you've hacked their arm off you beat them to death with it!
Definitely the dark ages, though I very frequently combine the two like Bonn-o-Tron suggested.

I said "no" to drugs, but they just wouldn't listen...

Giant robots with swords and guns. I can't find anything wrong with my idea.

GAMES WITH ONLY ONE TL ARE NEVER AS GOOD AS WITH MULTIPLE TL'S
I picked shooting though because there are tactics involved other than get near the enemy and role the dice. You have options

Castle battles (BIG ONES) are awesome. There is no fun in shooting your enemy from a distance - get in there and hack them apart.

The best thing to do is to just take swords and such and slaughter them.

But it is a good idea to have a few people with guns incase you have to take down a enemy sniper on a roof.

I have a compromise; guns that shoot swords and other pointy objects.

If all you're doing is running troops straight at each other, no wonder you're not enjoying yourself. Tactics in a dark age battle are all about trying to maneuver the enemy into situations where you have three guys attacking his one, so it's all about outflanking, concentrating strong points against weak points, and abusing the terrain to cut off his options. At that scale the reach difference between a halberd and a sword becomes critical, in a much more direct way than in gun-heavy ages.
If all else fails there's always archers and catapults.

And not all that hard to pull off... I'll get right on that.

5 inches (infantry) is not enough to move across large fields so i said you should change it (possibly 6 inches) or make nice rules about spending extra cp to train your army to walk faster.
