What are you using to base this wonderpiece? Watch the glue you use doesn't curl the edges as the base dries out.

a cunning attempt at ridicule...
Anyway, I bought a table off of craigslist.com that was about the size I wanted. The foam seems to be strong enough to act as it's own base, and it's light/durable enough that I can easily carry it around without worrying about structural damage. I covered the surface in hydrocal which hardens into what is basically a paintable cast. The only problem I encountered while painting was that the white pieces of cardboard I laid down to hold baseplates deformed severely. I ended up having to cut them out at the end, which was a royal pain in the ass. Hopefully it will still look ok once the details are applied.
If I were to do this again, I would lay down the flat cardboard pieces after the hydrocal was applied to the rest of the surface. I would also cover them in painter's tape to shield them from the paint and keep them flush with the surrounding land-form.
By far the most challenging part of building one of these is maintaining flat surfaces on which to put baseplates. I learned that hydrocal is not good for this unless maybe you were to buy a lot of it and pour it on directly.
