And easy to wear?

I don't think studs hurt all that much. You should try actually stepping on a baseplate; studs are flat, and weight distribution handles the rest. Plus, you wouldn't spend most of your time standing on them. I, for one, would be sitting.

actually id be very caeful about stepping on them with enough weight you can crush the pegs since they are hollow.

how much do you weigh?

I've never crushed a stud in my life, and I step on them all the time. They're so small they distribute weight very well.

Just make sure they're on a hard surface or they will bend.

i find that i break my little minifig hands more than anything else - mainly cos i have about a million of them scattered across the floor - at the moment most of my random civilian figs only have 1 finger

In 14 years of experience, I've only broken 1 LEGO piece. It was a hand.

I've cut sights off of lego guns, and I've cut the harpoon part of the harpoon gun piece off to make guns.

I sometimes cut, paint or use decals. The results aren't always satisfying but you get the hang of it after a several wasted pieces. My first custom minifig(without decals) was the ironman.

Modifying is hella fun. The problem is that if you're not a resourceful person, you end up wasting a lot of things. You'll cut a sword or gun in half to use one piece, and then waste the other half of it. I have a small box of "wasted" pieces like that, that I dig into every once in a while if I think a weapon needs something good. The 'extra bits box' system actually works surprisingly well, at least for me.

Maybe this is the same reason I like doing conversions for Warhammer Fantasy and 40K...

I just don't modify at all or use any pieces other than Lego, including BrickArms or anything like that.

brickarms, brickforge, MMCB, custom minifg shop, and fine colonier decals are the only non lego things i let into my lego collection - and blutac - and paper - and cellotape
