well, my castles and the like are scaled to minifigs, my battlemechs and artillery are scaled (as close as I can get) to people.

Of course there's also the obvious just really cool unit to throw into battles that people can't figure out how I made or where I got the idea from (like my current air ship for my pirate army).

I just got my first job after graduating from college, so I'm celebrating leaving the Dark Ages with a good chunk of my first paycheck. I think an MTT and two Hailfire sets might suffice for now...

I feel like I earned it after 4.5 years of engineering school. Looking at some of those Brickshelf galleries has given me a lot of... inspiration, and now I can finally afford to catch up.

I think I did the same thing.

Except, my first job after graduating from college was actually at Lego, so I felt a little silly paying for stuff I had in unlimited supply at work.

I really think someone would get suspicious if all of a sudden, massive amounts of parts went missing the week the new guy started.

I wish I had photos of the inside of the parts warehouse, but imagine a football-field-length room full of rows of rows of shelves of every Lego element in current production. Almost exactly like the scene in the Matrix, except you'd have to imagine that Neo said "Lego, lots of Lego" instead of "guns, lots of guns." And then imagine the guy showing you around saying "and this is just the first floor!"

I don't know what kind of supervillain-scale heist I would have had to plan in order to make a dent in that supply enough to make anybody suspicious. It wouldn't have done me much good though, since all I could do is take it back to my little Lego-owned apartment in Denmark. The best I could have done is filled my room with Lego and swum around in it Scrooge McDuck style.

Damn! Now I wish I'd thought of that earlier!

I just went back to visit a couple of months ago, and they've moved the whole elements supply to some secret super-secure location, I think in some kind of subterranean vault probably guarded by laser sharks. (Or maybe that's just what they told me, because they knew it was only a matter of time before the Scrooge McDuck thing occurred to me.) So I think that stealing any massive amount of loose parts would be a lot more difficult now than it would have been back then.

how does one acquire such a job? Are they looking for engineers, or do you have to be a graphic designer or in marketing or specialize in toy development or something? Either way I would imagine it's one of those things where you just have to know the right people to get your foot in the door. (or be really REALLY lucky)

I know that a lot of video game designers are ex-engineers. I think that's one of the reasons I'm doing it now, I like to keep my options open.

What Almighty Benny just asked is exactly what I've been wondering for years. In fact, my entire college plan has been to find a good engineering and design college, and then obtain a masters in something that will eventually catch the eye of someone working for Lego. Then this person will help me to get a job working for Lego. For years now I've had my eye on a degree in civil engineering, but I really don't think that's going to help with my evil plan.

Is it solipsistic in here, or is it just me?

1. Industrial Design is what you want. Those are the guys that design toasters, cars, trade show exhibits. Usually just the way it looks, the guts are designed by others.

2. Mechanical Engineers design the gears, springs and electro/mechanical parts of the toaster. Also the way Lego parts snap together and swivel.

3. Civil Engineers design bridges, sewers, roads.

4. Structural Engineers design the columns and beams that support a building.

5. Architects uhmm.... no comment.

I have no idea who Lego likes to hire, its just a generic unordered, but numbered list.

We have to work with Electrical Engineers a lot too. They design the circuit boards and other incomprehensible stuff. But they're all really odd folks, and either extremely lazy or workaholics. ME's are way more normal and probably have the most direct correlation to LEGO design. Most universities in the US don't have a dedicated Structural Engineering department, it's sort of mixed in with Civil and Mechanical.

I'm actually structural, but it's very tough. I was thinking about switching to another branch of civil like construction engineering or site design. But honestly, I don't think either of those would be appealing to Lego, even though it's been my dream to work for them since I was like 6.
