I've heard some good tales, one was the battle of badon hill (dagohir) where someones arrows passed safety inspection, and then one ended up sticking in a shield. Another cool tale, was actually from the darkon boards and why they kept wood as one of the materials for thrusting weapons. It was cool because even after people got hit they would be pole vaulted away from the wielder of the spear.
as for weapon differenses, swords in sca are made of ratan, spears are hardwood poles that are coverd in maybe one or 2 layers of foam, axes are 12ox or heavier leather that have been sown together, that and its usually alot of swords and board, darkon actually has the rules for different classes, even though there are a lot of warriors that does not preclude the existence of mages, clerics, rogues, assasins, monks, druids, and rangers. the nice thing is that you can found your own kingdoms and then you can basically try to conquer the world through the map. compared to sca or dagohir that just has you pound the other guy into shit, in darkon theres a reason to pound the other guy into shit.
