A Certain Gaussian Surface

The Magic SOB forum is for posts of story sequences that are frequently vignette-based. Put those here while actual battle reports can go in Reports From the Field.
You must talk like James T. Kirk in this forum at all times. Leonard Nimoy is fine too.

Why stop if you're good at something? Was there an ulterior motive?
Quit so you can get head.

But then if one is good at getting head, should one quit that too?

On topic: Good stuff, Colette. The plot thickens!

1/11/G.R. 2015
Corpora, Trattoria (homeworld), Trattoria, Northern Spirals, Nehellenium Galaxy

Image
The city of Corpora hosts the headquarters of many prominent Trattorian companies. Many Trattorian businessmen and CEOs call this place home, while traders and investors take a few minutes to commute from here to Aeraria, the city that hosts Trattoria's securities exchanges.

Image
Dr. Mikoto: Well, the Viérre Glass Corporation's headquarters sure looks the part.

Image
Dr. Mikoto: I wonder what business they have to discuss with the Trattorian Energy Commission? We don't seem to have any aligned interests.

Image
Dr. Mikoto: Ah, that must be the CEO. He's pretty late if he's just coming now.

Image
Hospitality Robot: How may I be of service?
CEO Dr. Mérieux: Like I said, Dr. Lachman, I am working my hardest to ensure that we get those clear-transparent mining rights in TSOC. Why don't you keep researching the smoke-transparent futures market like I told you to.

Image
CEO Dr. Mérieux: What do you mean the USA is a competitive threat? We have ten times as much capital as Corning!
Dr. Mikoto: ...W̶h̕ąt iś ̀g͟o̡i͝n̢g oņ??̡?̧

Image
Dr. Mikoto: Take that you businessman! Why don't you work for your money instead of sitting up in an office all day!
CEO Dr. Mérieux: ARGH...what has gotten into you, Dr. Mikoto?

Image
"Warning: Trattorian Citizen in danger. Electrical shock and nerve damage detected. Seek immediate medical treatment or Miracle Cure."

Image
The bystanders on the street flee.
Dr. Mikoto: Ummm...colleagues? What just happened? Why are you running away—oh, there's a body on the ground. Why don't you come back and help?

Image
"Attention: Please stay where you are. Emergency response is arriving."

Image
Police Robot: Attention—Dr. Misaka Mikoto—please remain where you are. A minifig Legal Department enforcer will be here shortly to arrest you. Although robot police are not authorized to detain a Trattorian Citizen, attempts at escape will be interpreted as resisting arrest.

Image
Dr. Mikoto: Well, I don't exactly understand what just...o͜h ͞sh͏i̛t̷ ͘it'̶s͜ ḩap͏pęning̶ ̡a͘ga̡in.

Image
Dr. Mikoto: Idiots! Sending robot police after an electromaster like myself!

Image
Dr. Mikoto: I'll show them what I can do!

Image
Dr. Mikoto: It's not just little coins and metal toys I can launch with my railgun powers!

Image
Trattorian Civilians: Holy entropy! It must be a Bavarian mage!
Trattorian Civilians: On the homeworld? Impossible, they could never sneak one so far in.

Image
Dr. Mikoto: Any sufficiently advanced technology...fear me, mere mortals!

Image
Dr. Mikoto: Pray to science that I don't strike you down from above!

Image
"This is TRF-00015 ("Smartest Guys in the Room") teleporting in. We've got a delicate containment breach situation on the homeworld, beam down the packet pronto."

Image
TRF-00015-1: Surround the anomaly and block off all paths to escape. TRF-00015-4, activate the packet when here.

Image
TRF-00015-4: Got it, sarge. Packet activated.

Image
Dr. Mikoto: What are you up to now?
TRF-00015-1: Best not use your electric powers here if you don't want to blow the whole place sky-high. The packet's pumping fine grain particles into the air—sparks aren't a terribly good idea at this point.

Image
TRF-00015-2: Sweet fucking dreams, whitecoat psycho.

The magical girl Colette is in frames 5 and 11 a little creepily if you ask me. This gets better and better every post.

Actually, the first one is a gif, that's probably why you didn't notice it.

I did notice a color change while I was reading some other text, so I thought it might be a gif, but when I watched for it I guess I didnt wait long enough.
So really these should be dubbed not subbed. :D
So all my attention is on the images.

My god. Everything here is gorgeous. Well done, indeed! I missed the Colette on the first readthrough also. I noticed the image darken but I thought it was a trick of my eye. Good catch, Devin. And well placed, Colette. That subtlety made the whole scene better. I don't think I could possibly gush enough about the visuals here.

That was pretty cool. Also pumping fine grain particles into the air to neutralize electrical powers is a clever if suicidal idea, so points for that.

Legislator Nakahara: Dr. Liang, you have been summoned today by the Trattorian Legislature’s Committee on Science to answer some questions regarding recent activity in the Science Department.

Image
Legislator Nakahara: I’m Legislator Dr. Nakahara of the 5th District, chair of the Legislative Committee on Science, retired Department Chair of Biology, two-time Nobel Laureate, and Fields Medalist.
Dr. Liang: How in the entropy does a biologist win a Fields Medal?
Legislator Nakahara: The committee will be asking the questions, dear.

Image
Legislator Nakahara: Today’s meeting was spurred by the rather unfortunate Mikoto incident that occurred a few days ago on this very planet, our homeworld. This is a matter of grave concern to all Trattorians, and we will comprehensively address this issue from all aspects.

Image
Legislator Gudiseva: If I may ask the inaugural question, madame chair?
Legislator Nakahara: You are recognized, Dr. Gudiseva.

Image
Legislator Gudiseva: I want to ask: why in Lavoisier’s name was Dr. Mikoto not only uncontained and unterminated, but allowed to roam freely through Trattorian society? Your reckless actions have directly caused the deaths of two Trattorian Citizens from this incident, including a CEO.

Image
Dr. Liang: The Science Department has never before encountered a situation where a Trattorian Citizen was itself an anomaly. We have taken active measures to terminate vectors of memetic and cognitohazardous containment breaches, including Citizens, but this unpredecented legal quandary resulted in the recent loss of life. Trattorian Citizens, after all, are guaranteed certain basic constitutional rights, including the right to a fair trial.

Image
Legislator Chang-Park: Then why do no records exist of the Science Department ever consulting with attorneys from the Legal Department? Inter-departmental rivalry aside, the Legal Department could have capably advised your scientists on how to handle the matter—you should have at least filed for an arrest warrant on Dr. Mikoto, and precedent exists, such as in the case Tagawa v. Trattorian Legal Department, for killing Citizens that pose an “immediate and imminent” threat to the nation.

Image
Legislator Shiswawala: Be it further resolved, that the Science Department illegally created an entirely classified and unaccountable agency known as the Black Box Bureau. The committee was shocked after reviewing the BBB documents we subpoenaed. Your mandate was to discreetly terminate all anomalies in the BrikVerse, especially those that pose a threat to Trattoria. Instead, you undertook dangerous propositions containing and experimenting on potentially harmful anomalies. This is neither the Scythian Office of Naval Intelligence nor the Research and Artefact Recovery Commission—we would do very well to avoid the reckless risks and ensuing consequences that plague the above two organizations.

Image
Dr. Liang: ...
Legislator Nakahara: Dr. Liang?
Dr. Liang: Gödel damn it, this really isn’t going well. They actually read everything...

Ummm, well, the Science Department wanted to maintain its focus on mainstream, accepted science, so we formulated a semi-independent subsidiary agency to handle the anomalous and other pseudoscience. In addition, the secrecy surrounding the BBB is entirely justified—we do not wish to sow unnecessary worry amongst the Trattorian populace regarding possible—

Image
Legislator Charron: Then you clearly failed. There exists no plausible deniability for the Mikoto incident—it happened in a very public avenue, a corporate headquarters no less, brimming with witnesses and eager recording devices. The event has dominated the recent Trattorian media cycle and the people have expressed disgruntlement at the government’s handling of the crisis. The Trattorian government has been forced to acknowledge the existence of magical girls, espers, and other anomalies that we have repeatedly attempted to cover up.
