Ark of the Inconvenient (updated with many photos)

Post by Talarius » Fri May 28, 2010 10:42 pm

[read here for the backstory, then scroll down several posts to see the batrep]

I'll be playing a game of BrikWars at Kublacon tomorrow. Here's the scenario I came up with and some initial pictures of the layout and initial forces involved. The table is a little sparse but it's the best I can do for now. I've embellished it a little more than you see here, so it's not quite so empty. Looking forward to the game.

Oh, btw, the tanks are Best-Lock. $7.99 each. They are worth every penny.

Scenario: “Ark of the Inconvenient”
Timeline: Early March, 1943
Battlezone: German-occupied Crimean peninsula along the Black Sea.
(site of the “Charge of the Light Brigade” 89 years prior)

Situation Report 1:
German forces have occupied the Crimean peninsula since May, 1942. They are using the area as an avenue to reinforce their army groups fighting (NOT retreating or being destroyed, no-no-no-no-no) in south-western Russia.

Strange rumors have come to the attention of Piltogg Generalkommissar in command of Crimea, Alfred Eduard Frauenfeld. He has recently heard from the officers in command of his local patrols that the Crimean partisans are protecting something of great (and possibly spiritual) value in the mountains of the peninsula. He forwarded this information to the Reichskommissariaten, which saw the potential importance this could hold for the Fuhrer. The Obscura Korps was put into action at once, sending one of it’s top agents: Pilot Jens Haussler.

Jens is a crack pilot of the Luftwaffe and an inspired student of the occult. He has also practiced the terror tactics of the SS and is, in general, Not-Nice-At-All and A-Very-Dangerous-Person. On arrival in Sevastopol, he interrogated one of the captured partisans, learning a little more: the partisans have discovered the location of a long-lost religious icon of great significance. More than this, he was unable to reveal as the site is protected in some way that prevent the partisans from approaching. Knowing the interest the Fuhrer holds for such objects, Jens knew his mission: Assemble a patrol of German soldiers, reinforced by a pair of Panzer III’s to overwhelm the partisans in the area and acquire the artifact at once!

Situation Report 2:
Part-time archeologist, part-time OSS agent, Dr. Solo Jones was assisting the British Museum in London when he received an urgent communication from Washington. A desperate appeal had reached them from the Soviets; a historical artifact of religious significance was about to be stolen from them in German-occupied Crimea. Soviet troops were fully committed to the expulsion of German armies in the Motherland. They asked for the immediate assistance of Dr. Jones in the delicate removal of this priceless artifact from the Piltogg’s clutches.

With the assistance of the British MI6 and American OSS organizations, Dr. Jones assembled a small strike-team of elite commandos to travel to the Crimean peninsula immediately. Armored reinforcements would meet them at port in northern Russia. Traveling by train to Scotland, then by air over the Arctic circle to Arkhengelsk, where he and his fully-assembled crew were whisked south, again by train.

There was small chance of success in the endeavor, but the attempt had to be made; both for the sake of preservation of a unique artifact and to prove to Stalin that the Allies intended to be equal partners with the Soviets in defeating the Axis menace.

Keep in mind I said, "They are worth every penny" and that statement cuts both ways: they are simultaneously an incredible bargain compared to what you'd pay for an equivalent tank made of Legores, while the comparative quality of the product is definitely low. But you know what? For $8 I don't care if it's not up to par. It'll serve.

I disagree, this looks awesome and will probably be a great game to play and watch. if only LEGO had awesome sets at such low prices. I hope i get to see a battle report, as this has me wanting more already. And I think that this game is a nice interpretation of a classic movie.

The battlefield looks extremely cool, great for all sorts of battles! The armies look great too, kinda reminds me of Battlefield Heroes, those cute looking shermans :)
 Why not make also some aircraft, a Mustang and a Messerschmidt for example?

The epic results

Post by Talarius » Tue Jun 01, 2010 12:02 pm

Okay, the battle is over. Here are the results:
(Oh, and we were playing at BLAZING fast speed, so I failed to take a lot of the "Before" pictures you are used to seeing in battle reports.)

Initial Deployment:
Image

Americans move out. (Dr. Jones has temporarily fallen off his jeep)
The Crimean merchant has pulled a hidden MP40 from under her fruit stand and is Sprinting towards the oil refinery.
Image

Germans race to get to the Ark first
Image

Partisan tries to shoot driver of German command car, rolls a critical failure and blows her hand off.
Image

Probably didn't keep her stolen MP40 clean, so it misfired.
Image

A Sherman gets the first intentional damage of the game.
Image

The bazooka team and 2nd Sherman get into position, targeting the Panzer III's
Image

These two were supposed to be sprinting across the battlefield, but decided to take a break. Their buddy with the BAR acquires a horse
Image

Secret Faction revealed! Ark Defenders. The Americans get too close and the Ark Defenders spring from hiding.
Image

An Ark Defender decapitates a jeep driver. This jeep is carrying Dr. Jones and a medic, who (again) temporarily fell overboard while we were setting up this shot. The Ark Defender Hero fails to kill the driver on his Jeep.
Image

After both panzers miss, the infantry show them how to get it done. They popped the turret off, but the Sherman is still mobile.
Image

The tank commander jumped clear into the trees at the bottom of the photo. The Sherman was still operational, but I forgot to use it the rest of the game. D'oh!
Image

The German command car loops around the oil refinery and targets the two slackers taking a break in the middle of the battle.
Image

The resulting devastating damage.
Image

The Opel Blitz arrives at the site of the Ark and the infantry pile out. The MG42 fires on the Ark Defenders, killing one and damaging the crystal case protecting the Ark.
Image

The jeep driven by the decapitated driver runs out of control directly into the Ark, crushing a Defender against it. The Ark Defender riding on the hood is thrown into the distance, as is the Medic riding in back. Dr. Solo Jones used his Heroic Feat to lasso an outcropping of the mountain range and pulled himself to safety.
Image

He doesn't stick the landing.
Image

The American medic is also smeared across the battlefield.
Image

The Ark Defender Hero had survived being thrown from his U.S. jeep and then Bailed out of the way when the third jeep tried to crush him against the back of the first jeep. A massive chain-reaction collision takes place between the two jeeps and the Ark.
Image

The Ark is knocked free of it's plinth in the resulting destruction and its power is revealed. All dead within range are reincarnated as Undead Ark Defenders, who will kill the nearest figure in range.
Image

One of the undead picks up a rifle. Will he know how to use it?
Image

The (living) Ark Defender Hero leaps over the jeep carnage and lands behind Dr. Jones on the ridgeline.
Image

Dr. Jone's investigation into the Ark of the Inconvenient is cut short.
Image

One former squad-mate attacks another with a severed arm... rather ineffectively.
Image

The driver of this truck gets a VERY close shave.
Image

Another angle on the driver's demise
Image

The Ark Defender Hero is killed by a skeleton right after he killed Dr. Jones... wait, shouldn't the Ark Defenders and skeletons be allies!?
Image

The Sherman tank commander was trying to sneak past the panzers... didn't work out too well.
Image

Panzer III's open fire on the remaining Sherman
Image

The 2nd Sherman is destroyed and the bazooka team is killed in the resulting explosion.
Image

The out-of-control Opel Blitz truck runs over a skeleton, but narrowly misses the G.I.
Image

The German's MP40 misfires and explodes, blowing off his hand. He probably didn't clean his gun either.
Image

The German command car rams into the horse, knocking it 12". The G.I. with the BAR jumped clear...
Image

...but the German hero, Jens Haussler wasn't going to let him escape. 2 bullets in the back of the head, execution style. :-\
Image

Some fairly convincing damage dice.
Image

Someone finally notices the elephant in the room. After ~3 hours, I am finally asked, "Can I shoot the oil tanks?" "Heck, yeah!" I respond. I'd been planning to do it myself eventually. The German Panzerschreck fires at the oil refinery in order to kill the partisan, as she's the only target in LOS.
Image

Ka-BOOOMMM!!!
The refinery explodes in spectacular fashion. Far more devastating than the Germans expected, destroying everything on the battlefield in a cataclysmic explosion. Everyone dies.
Image

Germans have their revenge?
Well, she didn't actually accomplish anything in the battle, but she did defy the Third Reich... and certainly paid the price!
Image

Unfortunately, the Germans also killed a lot of their own troops including the Obscura Korps hero, Jens Haussler. Would the secret of the Ark of the Inconvenient be lost once more? Probably.
Image
Image

The horror. The carnage. The Legos.

We had 3 players and 4 dedicated friends that hung out for the majority of the game. DOZENS of people came by, told us how cool it looked, asked about the rules (which we promoted, of course), took pictures, etc.

When I started setting up I couldn't have counted to 15 before there was a young kid standing right at my side. The table next to us was being used by some board-gaming parents, and their sons & daughters showed up and were VERY interested in what I was building, of course. As a parent myself, I wasn't bothered by the interest of the youth while we getting ready, but I was very glad that they vacated the area for some different activity for the entirety of the game. Some of them were fairly young and I think the concept of bloody Legos all over the table would have disturbed them. They came back as we were cleaning up, so we were more or less able to prevent them from figuring out the true nature of BrikWars.

This game was a complete success. We played very, very quickly. The only thing we paused over, rules-wise, was how collisions and knock-back works. Still not sure we did it right, but don't care as the results were hilarious.

I was using my own modified version of how multiple hits occur in creation damage, which I wrote about in my Hoth battle. Made one change this time: Instead of each point of damage reducing the armor level as normal, it would reduce the die result for all attack & armor rolls for the creation. So, 3 points of damage on a tank would mean that each armor die result would be at -3 and each attack die roll would be at -3 too. I thought this was a more gradual reduction in creation effectiveness. It seemed to work okay, although further play-testing will reveal the truth of that.

I got to do a lot of fun GM hand-waving, like, "collisions do triple damage on crystal enclosures" and "all dead bodies within 3d6 are reincarnated" etc.

It was great fun. Can't wait to play again!

Oh, and there was a whole back-story about the contents of the Ark of the Inconvenient that I won't reveal yet, but there's a (silly) reason behind the name.

Thanks for reading!

Great report, thanks for sharing! Looks like you had lots of fun :)

All the pictures were clean and sharp, wich makes reading oh so much more enjoyable. Both factions looked very cool with their tanks and all, I'll have to get some brickarms myself.

I especially liked the jeep mayhem. Collisions are funny when I'm not in them

This was an epic battle, extremely well sorted out and played. The terrain was awesome as were the units (Best-Lock=crap, but they played their part in adding armour to the battle).

Where was this held? You might have mentioned it but I didn't see it.

Also, the effects you added were awesome. 8)
